Apple® announced a free software update for its revolutionary iPhone™ that allows users to automatically find their location using the redesigned Maps application*; text message multiple people in one message; create Web Clips for their favorite websites; customize their home screen; and watch movies rented from the new iTunes® Movie Rentals right on their iPhone.

The iphone GPS module allows jail broken iphones to finally have GPS functionality. This module is in development and will be shipping in February. All software is open source and more applications are being written every day.

Thanks to Apple’s recent iPhone update (v1.1.1), anyone upgrading to the new iPhone firmware will find that their third-party application are pretty much dead (for now, at least). That’s unfortunate for anyone that shelled out their hard-earned cash for applications like Ambrosia Software’s iToner and Navizon’s Virtual GPS.

Most of us have heard about GPS systems, but don t know a lot about the various brands, like Garmin, Navman, or Tomtom GPS software. The latter provides GPS solutions for a wide number of applications, including navigation in your car, on a motorcycle, from your phone or PDA or at the office.

Using your mobile phone or PDA, along with your GPS receiver, you can record and view your movements in detail on Google Earth or Google Maps. You can even use the free service for live tracking using Google Earth or Google Maps.
