The Death Of The Blog Post - Smashing Magazine

by 3 others
Barring the text and images, each one generally has the exact same layout. We see little originality from one post to the next. Of course, consistency and branding are extremely important to consider when designing a website or blog, but what about individuality? Does a blog post about kittens deserve the same layout as one about CSS hacks?

A Brief History of Internet Spam - TIME

Spam hardly needs an introduction. Anyone with an e-mail account knows the acute frustration of being inundated with offers of pills from virtual pharmacists, financial propositions from Nigerian princes and pictures for fetish sites that really, really shouldn't exist. Spam has even gone beyond e-mail: like kudzu, it adapts to clog whatever online inbox you might choose.

Flickr: Landing Around The World

Documenting the approach into airports around the world. Let's see if we can get them all covered! Flickr recognises airport codes. If you add a video to your own map, then add the video to the group, it will show up on the group map auto-magically. Also, there's separate privacy level for location info on your photos. (You might be happy to let everyone see a photo, but only let your friends know where it was taken.)

Livre dont vous êtes le héros

by 2 others
As a child of the 80s, the Choose Your Own Adventure books were a fixture of my rainy afternoons. My elementary school library kept a low, fairly unmaintained-looking shelf of them hidden in one of its back corners. Whether this non-marquee placement was an attempt by the librarians to deemphasize the books in favor of ‘serious’ (children’s) literature or was simply my good luck I still haven’t worked out. But it meant there was a place that I could retreat to and dive into unfamiliar worlds without distraction.

Top 10 Reasons Why the Closing of Geocities is Long Overdue - Nettuts+

Geocities is finally, after nearly fifteen years, bowing its head and closing its doors. While the first reactions of many, like myself, was, "it's about time;" others embraced the nostalgia of their first websites in the nineties - full of animated gifs, enormous counters, midi tunes, frames, tables, ... the list goes on and on. With that said, we can all agree on one thing if we're truly honest with ourselves: this closure is long overdue!

oostring/weblog » Roadtrip poster final

This poster (800×1000mm) was designed to summarize and explain the summer holiday of 2009: a roadtrip/ moving house expedition undertaken by my partner Marthe and I, from Norway to England and back. It started as a tool for keeping track of costs, but was developed into a full trip overview as more details were added. Key data such as cost, distance and time are presented in various ways to create a rich data log.

ASCII by Jason Scott / 4Chan: Sage Not Bump (For Now)

OK, so the upshot is that the 4chan archives I’ve acquired will not be going up to archive.org, or anywhere public, anytime soon.

Mob Rule! How Users Took Over Twitter | Magazine

It’s easy to write off Twitter as a happy accident, a right-place, right-time fluke. But that misses the point. When Twitter’s creators designed the service, they made a series of crucial and deliberate decisions — ones that seem brilliant in retrospect — that created the conditions that allow users to innovate. The first was a commitment to simplicity. A little history: Williams’ previous company was a podcasting venture called Odeo. After Apple started distributing podcasts in June 2005, Odeo was pretty much redundant, so Williams started looking for a new idea. Jack Dorsey, one of his engineers, had one for him: status updates — specifically, brief reports that answered questions like: Where are you? What are you doing?

Journalism.co.uk :: LePost.fr: How amateurs produce valuable journalism

LePost's model is quite unique in the world: it's a social media approach and a newsroom of journalists who produce their own content and co-produce news with users. Le Post takes the 'pulse' of the news: what people are talking about concerning the news.

Petite fille...

The wraps come off data.gov.uk! - Archive - The Dextrous Web

The site is a blend of the US’s equivalent, data.gov, and Directgov | Innovate. It’s got a listing of available data packages, powered by the Comprehensive Knowledge Archive Network, and user-generated lists of apps and new ideas. This is just right: the data you need, combined with a way to promote the things you make and a place to get ideas if you’ve got itchy typing fingers but lack inspiration.
