AHAH is a very simple technique for dynamically updating web pages using JavaScript. It involves using XMLHTTPRequest to retrieve (X)HTML fragments which are then inserted directly into the web page, whence they can be styled using CSS

Although Javascript, as it exists in your browser today, isn't technically the best way to create a chatroom, it is, to some extent, possible. See the above link for an example. NOTE: The refresh rate has been turned down on that site intentionally to save bandwidth.
