在这个浮躁透顶的社会，怀特的文字让人慢下来，让人好像可以随着他高高在上地逃离，可以在他毫无才气的矫情中深吸一口气，去到缅因的小镇上，和小动物们为伍，再根据新闻对时政隔靴搔个痒逗点趣。这些偏偏最不能让我忍受，就像我不能忍受他的重头文章《这就是纽约》和《重游缅湖》。我觉得他既不爱纽约，也不爱缅因的那个湖，更不爱小地方的人和事。最麻烦的是，他也不讨厌那里的一切，他只是个被《纽约客》惯坏了的专栏作家，为赶稿期，把他生活的小镇和那些无辜的猪狗牛羊糟蹋了。
