Anyway I've learned my lesson and will treat the Atom Publishing Protocol (APP) and GData as separate protocols instead of using them interchangeably in the future.

The essence of REST is to make the states of the protocol explicit and addressible by URIs.

The key requirement for the protocol is that the Client and Server can reach agreement on the success of a message exchange.
