The Z-Machine Preservation Project

The Z-Machine Preservation Project (ZMPP) is a modern implementation of the Z-machine in Java. It is completely written from scratch using Java 5 to provide an architecture that is easy to understand, maintain and extend. The goal is to provide an interpreter implementation that is standard compliant and offers the possibility to play interactive fiction on many platforms without recompiling the source code.

The Mac OS X user interface and overall visual design are by Andrew Hunter. The Windows user interface is by David Kinder. Theoretical guidance and advice from Emily Short and Andrew Plotkin was invaluable, as was Sonja Kesserich's testing.

There are some tremendous "interactive fictions" (as they're now called) out there in Internet Land, from the re-issue of the classic Hitchhiker's Guilde to the Galaxy to the superb adaptation of Hamlet (which was such a hit that it seems to have overstepped its bandwidth allowance).
