O virtual é cada vez mais real | no mínimo | Reportagem

by bcpbcp

Something Awful

by bcpbcp (via)
Everyone can relate to the experience of purchasing a popular video game title and finding out the gameplay is a huge pile of crap. This was especially true of old Nintendo games, where were often just violent adventures in trying to get a vaguely human-shaped set of blocks to jump over a pit. This trend of awful gameplay and stories continues to this day, thanks in part to thousands of game designers without any vision whatsoever. This week the Something Awful Forum Goons do some community service and re-title games in a more honest manner.

Habitat Chronicles

"In 1985 we began work on what would become one of the world's first multi-person graphical virtual worlds, and arguably the first of what are now awkwardly called "Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games" (MMORPGs). Thus began a series of adventures in technology, business, and the online world which continue to this day. This site is where we tell our story: the things we learned, the mistakes we made, the people we met, a tale of human brilliance and folly and things you would never have imagined."

Call for Papers: Narrative AI and Games

by bcpbcp (via)
There is an increasing interest in the computer games industry in the development of games with emotionally compelling interactive storylines. Games designers, screen writers and narrative theorists propose contrasting approaches to engineering satisfying stories in which players can participate. This symposium focuses on the application of artificial intelligence techniques, frameworks and theories to the creation of interactive narrative in game worlds. It will address questions such as: how can we engineer believable story characters which can interact with players in an emotionally convincing way; how can we design interactive stories in which the player’s experience is central; how can we scale up prototype interactive narrative architectures to meet the requirements of today’s game engines; and what are the applications of narrative games in other domains such as education or health? Themes running throughout the symposium will be: the extent to which games engines can be used as research tools and appropriate methods for disseminating and sharing prototype systems throughout the community.
