Though H.264 plays an important role in video, as our goal is to enable open innovation, support for the codec will be removed and our resources directed towards completely open codec technologies.

There is a clear need for an open alternative, but the codec controversy could make it difficult.

The purpose of this article is to explain with simple words what H.264 is, its advantages (and disadvantages) comparing to well known codecs like DivX and XviD as well as simple instructions to create and playback H.264 video files.
