Malgré un navigateur très en retard sur tous les autres, Microsoft conserve une position dominante sur le marché des navigateurs, juste parce qu'il est livré par défaut avec tous les PC. C'est très dommageable à l'évolution du Web, pour lesquels IE6 et maintenant IE7 sont de véritables boulets qui limitent la création de services innovants et à cause de leurs nombreux bugs, plombent les coûts de création des sites Web.

En utilisant Internet Explorer, on peut apercevoir depuis peu sur la page d'accueil de Google un bouton (assez imposant) proposant d'installer le navigateur Chrome.

Starting on or about the third week of April, users still running IE6 or IE7 on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, or Windows Server 2008 will get will get a notification through Automatic Update about IE8. This rollout will start with a narrow audience and expand over time to the entire user base. On Windows XP and Server 2003, the update will be High-Priority. On Windows Vista and Server 2008 it will be Important. IE8 will not automatically install on machines. Users must opt-in to install IE8. Users will see a Welcome screen that offers choices: Ask later, install now, or don’t install.

Le navigateur de Microsoft abandonne toujours du terrain face à ses concurrents. D'après le baromètre de Net Applications, IE (toutes versions confondues) ne représentait plus que 67,4% des visites sur le Web au mois de février dans le monde. Un an plus tôt, la part d'Internet Explorer était encore de 74,88%.

Pour la première fois de son histoire, Firefox 3, le navigateur de la Fondation Mozilla précède une version d’Internet Explorer (IE) en termes de parts de marché. Par ailleurs, l’écart avec IE7 n’a jamais été aussi faible.
