I put together this list for a co-worker who wants to learn more about Cassandra: (0.5 beta 2 out now!)

http_rrd_profiler is an HTTP testing/monitoring tool written in Python. It uses Python's httplib to send a GET request to a web resource and adds performance timing instrumentation between each step of the request/response. RRDTool is used for data storage and graph generation. RRDtool is an open source, high performance logging and graphing system for time-series data.

Local Code : Real Estates uses geospatial analysis to identify thousands of publicly owned abandoned sites in major US cities, imagining this distributed, vacant landscape as a new urban system. Using parametric design, a landscape proposal for each site is tailored to local conditions, optimizing thermal and hydrological performance to enhance the whole city’s ecology—and relieving burdens on existing infrastructure. Local Code’s quantifiable effects on energy usage and stormwater remediation eradicate the need for more expensive, yet invisible, sewer and electrical upgrades. In addition, the project uses citizen participation to conceive a new, more public infrastructure as well —a robust network of urban greenways with tangible benefits to the health and safety of every citizen.

A Webmachine application is a set of resources, each of which is a set of functions over the state of the resource. We really mean functions here, not object-methods, infinite-server-loops, or any other such construction. This aspect of Webmachine is one of the reasons why Webmachine applications are relatively easy to understand and extend.

La discussion est difficile car elle mélange les genres.

1. La politique de nombreux éditeurs face à leurs auteurs est digne de l’exploitation. N’oublions pas que sur le prix d’un livre l’auteur ne touche qu’environ 10% des droits (sauf dans certaines maisons d’éditions numériques).

2. La disponibilité des titres épuisés qui ne seront jamais réimprimés par un éditeur est un gros problème.

3. L’impossibilité pour certains auteurs de jouir de leur texte une fois cette édition épuisée est anormale.

4. Google indexe les livres des auteurs sans le demander est en effet à discuter.

5. Google empêchant l’accès aux livres tombés dans le domaine public qu’ils ont numérisé est anormal. (Au moins le gouvernement français a négocié avec les mormons pour les microfilms d’état civil d’en avoir une copie libre d’utilisation)

Finalement, toutes ces batailles légales ne protègent pas les auteurs mais le gagne-pain des maisons d’éditions qui font un revenu plus ou moins important sur une économie d’échelle. Et c’est cela qui dérange certains auteurs.

Les professions qui auront dû mal (ou vont en partie disparaître) dans les années qui viennent :

* éditeur

* imprimeur

Les auteurs (la littérature) continueront de vivre. Ils ne gagnaient déjà pas leur vie avec les livres.

Les microformats ont bientôt 6 ans, et hResume très bientôt 4 ans. Mais ce n'est pas grave, attendons encore 5 ou 6 ans que les microformats maturent un peu et que les spécs soient finalisées.

Moi qui pensait que <audio> et <video> étaient prag-ma-ti-ques. Mais non, après des semaines de débats sur les formats à supporter (ou non), les ultra-géniaux (et modestes) concepteurs de HTML 5 ont laissé un élément de base d'utilisabilité de côté. Comme quoi, les mailing-list du WHAT WG auraient dû être bannies à Copenhague.
