VFAT 是 FAT 檔案系統的延伸，在 Windows 95 中首次出現。VFAT 保持與 FAT 的向後相容性，但規則放寬。例如，VFAT 檔名最多可以包含 255 個字元、空格及多個句點。雖然 VFAT 保留檔名的大小寫，但並不區分大小寫。
