Richer couples! Cheaper mortgages! Millions of unwanted houses! Despite all this, young home owners declined for 30 years, even before the Great Recession. Here's how the American Dream shrank.

The results may be primitive by professional standards, and structurally unsound when confronted with hurricanes and earthquakes, but they nevertheless reflect considerable inventiveness and ingenuity in the face of daunting economic and social conditions. Their very existence is a a manifestation of human spirit and community.

Triple Canopy works collectively with writers, artists, researchers and other collaborators on projects that deal critically with culture and politics, and the ways people engage them, both online and in the world at large. These investigations are realized in an online magazine as well as in public programs and print publications encompassing various fields and locales. We aim to present work and advance ideas informed by a multitude of disciplines and perspectives, and to disseminate them among a broad and diverse audience.

Speed Limits

From 19 May to 12 October 2009

The exhibition addresses the pivotal role played by speed in modern life: from art to architecture and urbanism to graphics and design to economics to the material culture of the eras of industry and information. It marks the centenary of the foundation of the Italian Futurist movement and is curated by Jeffrey T. Schnapp, Stanford Humanities Lab.

Speed Limits is co-organised by the CCA, Montréal, and the Wolfsonian-Florida International University, Miami Beach.
