As happy as I am to see them going with UML, I am hoping the grapevine is wrong, and that the tools are not exclusively for the VSTS 2010 Architecture versions. I am afraid if that is the case, they won't be getting used very much at all. At least not in the environments I have been in lately. .....

The infamous Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) probably hasn’t escaped the notice of anyone who has used a computer in the last decade or so. If you haven’t seen it on your own PC, you probably know someone it has happened to.
There is actually a ridiculous amount of BSOD photos to be found around the Web. And not just of PCs. As this post will show you, the blue error screen seems to show up everywhere, and often in highly unexpected locations.

Microsoft is looking to make jQuery part of their official development platform. Their JavaScript offering today includes the ASP.NET Ajax Framework and they’re looking to expand it with the use of jQuery. This means that jQuery will be distributed with Visual Studio (which will include jQuery intellisense, snippets, examples, and documentation).

To give you some perspective, in 1996…
* Google.com didn’t exist yet.
* In January 1996 there were only 100,000 websites, compared to more than 160 million in 2008.
* The web browser of choice was Netscape Navigator, followed by Microsoft Internet Explorer as a distant second (Microsoft launched IE 3 in 1996).
* Most people used dial-up Internet connections with mighty speeds ranging from 28.8Kbps to 34.4Kbps. Highly modern 56Kbps modems would arrive in 1997.
* People had only recently started to switch from 640×480 to 800×600 screen resolutions.

Ce que l’on remarque, c’est que ce n’est pas vraiment la concurrence qui est au cœur des problèmes de Microsoft; c’est le fait que des nouvelles sociétés ont donné l’envie aux utilisateurs d’essayer de nouvelles technologies et de payer pour, s’il le faut. Les consommateurs de la génération -Y se rendent compte qu’ils n’ont plus besoin de Microsoft. Des sociétés comme Facebook, Apple et Google ont changé les habitudes de consommation, surtout celles des jeunes.

Reporting Services Scripter is a .NET Windows Forms application that enables scripting and transfer of all Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services catalog items to aid in transferring them from one server to another. It can also be used to easily move items on mass from one Reporting Services folder to another on the same server. Depending on the scripting options chosen, Reporting Services Scripter can also transfer all catalog item properties such as Descriptions, History options, Execution options (including report specific and shared schedules), Subscriptions (normal and data driven) and server side report parameters.

Internet Explorer, pour Google, a deux gros inconvénients :
- 1. il est peu performant (et peu sécurisé) et évolue très peu, donc il limite ce que Google peut proposer comme services innovants à ses utilisateurs.
- 2. il est contrôlé par une société, Microsoft, qui est en concurrence frontale avec Google sur plusieurs points, dont la recherche Web et la publicité en ligne (les deux points forts de Google, et les plus lucratifs).
Donc, d'un point de vue stratégique, Internet Explorer est un (gros) caillou dans la chaussure de Google : imaginez comme il doit être pénible de dépendre de votre pire ennemi pour interagir avec vos clients !

Microsoft publie ce soir la deuxième version bêta de son futur navigateur Internet Explorer 8. Il s'agit de la dernière bêta avant la version RTM (Release to manufacturing) prévue « d'ici à la fin de l'année ». IE 8 bêta 2 intègre toutes les fonctions du navigateur ; l'éditeur travaillera désormais sur l'amélioration des performances du logiciel.

Le mois dernier je mettais en ligne coup sur coup trois articles gravitant autour de la stratégie de partenariat de Microsoft à l'école française : Projetice ou le cas exemplaire d'un partenariat très privilégié entre Microsoft et une association d'enseignants, Du premier Forum des Enseignants Innovants et du rôle exact de son discret partenaire Microsoft et Forum des Enseignants Innovants suite et fin.
J'ai eu alors l'agréable surprise de voir Thierry de Vulpillières, le responsable Microsoft de ces partenariats, intervenir dans les commentaires. Et comme ce n'est pas tous les jours qu'une telle personnalité vient nous rendre visite, j'ai pris le temps de lui répondre en détail point par point.
