PUBLIC MARKS with tags écologie & photography

Certains reconnaîtront dans le titre de mon article, l'une des formules fétiches de Jean Cocteau pour désigner ses textes journalistico-poétiques. En lisant le fil d'actualité d'un grand quotidien, j'ai été frappée par la poésie surréaliste du titre d'un article : "Le mythe du pot de yahourt recyclé" La mythologie du XXIème siècle serait-elle une mythologie aussi violente que celle des siècles passés et moralisatrice ? Mais peut-on parler de mythologie lorsqu'il s'agit d'une histoire en train de se construire ? En tout cas, la photo qui accompagne cette article est belle et laisse à l'imagination tout son pouvoir.

This new series looks at contemporary American culture through the austere lens of statistics. Each image portrays a specific quantity of something: fifteen million sheets of office paper (five minutes of paper use); 106,000 aluminum cans (thirty seconds of can consumption) and so on. My hope is that images representing these quantities might have a different effect than the raw numbers alone, such as we find daily in articles and books. Statistics can feel abstract and anesthetizing, making it difficult to connect with and make meaning of 3.6 million SUV sales in one year, for example, or 2.3 million Americans in prison, or 426,000 cell phones retired every day. This project visually examines these vast and bizarre measures of our society, in large intricately detailed prints assembled from thousands of smaller photographs.

NorthSouthEastWest tells the story of these places; ice-caps, mega-cities, rice fields, townships, islands, forests and much more. It deals with the threats that millions face to their food supplies, fresh water, health, culture and even the existence of their countries. But it also details a range of solutions that may stave off the worst of the crisis. There are big and small ideas, some simple, others technically complex, but all part of the battle to stop climate change getting out of hand.
