SOA Manifesto - Stefan Tilkov's Random Stuff

by karlcow

The reason for the manifesto being somewhat vague, in my opinion, is a good one – describe the values that are common to those who aim to improve upon the typical company's IT landscape, regardless of the actual technical architecture.

Welcome to the World Press Photo Contest Archive

by sbrothier
For over fifty years the World Press Photo contest has captured images of our times. Our archive of winning photos is not only a record of more than half a century of human history, but a showcase of successive styles in photography and reportage. The archive gallery comprises some 10,000 images. It includes photos that have become icons, by some of the leading names in the profession. World Press Photo has put them online with the aim of sharing our knowledge, resources and experience with the widest possible network. This site was made possible with the support of the Mondriaan Foundation and VSB Foundation.

Waste is part of life. Human and animal bodies produce natural waste, whereas societies produce synthetic waste. While we cannot control the level of natural waste as its production is an organic part of biological survival, we can drastically reduce the production of synthetic waste. Natural and synthetic waste come in two varieties - reusable and nonreusable. The aim of a sustainable waste economy is to reuse as much waste as possible, even to the point of reducing waste surplus to zero.

Inside Out

by Sarcomical
this one's a very new discovery for me, and i like to look through the blog section especially. their description says it best: "Part literary publication, part therapeutic expression, our aim is to promote creativity for self-development through the publication of a diverse mix of artistic work, all with a focus on self-awareness and self-help. Why? Because we believe that sometimes simply owning something on the page is all it takes to move past it and move on, for both reader and creator."

About

by karlcow

Often when reading a typical article or interview we are left unmoved, unenlightened and uninspired. Formulaic and sterile conversations prevent responses or expression from going beyond surface level. Wading through the mundane to find the truly good stuff in life can be a struggle, but it is far worse to not even bother trying. A ‘selector’ is one that singles out something in particular. In the case of this bi-annual publication, we focus on the idea of truth with the aim of portraying the honesty and sincerity of both the individuals and places we choose to examine. We are coming together to celebrate those who have gone above and beyond what’s expected – individuals who have dedicated their lives to something great. Selector’s objective is to present open dialogues with substance, to take a momentary break from busy lives to share some of the sights and sounds encountered by those pursuing the uncommon

Lost Films

by paulantoinem
LOST FILMS is a new internet portal aimed at collecting and documenting film titles, which are believed or have been declared "lost". The ARCHIVE currently contains over 3500 entries, a number of which are extensively illustrated with surviving documents contributed by archives and individuals worldwide. The IDENTIFY section contains images and short video clips of around 50 unknown or unidentified films, which face the danger of also becoming lost if not identified by members. The aim of LOST FILMS is not to produce a definitive list of lost films but to provide a platform where members can frequently - and freely - exchange, add and update information.

Interactive City - Redefining the Basemap - Sant

by karlcow

Current collaborative mapping projects using locative media technologies have often overlooked the conventions of the base map as a site for reinvention. Although these projects are ambitious in their aim to propose alternative organizations of urban space through the way it is digitally mapped, they remain bounded by datasets that reinforce a Cartesian and static notion of urban space.
