Erik Engbrecht's Blog: Pondering Actor Design Trades

by jpcaruana (via)
# Why is the standard Scala actor implementation so complex when others have done it in a such simpler fashion? # Is it better to have one, big actor library that supports a wide variety of use cases, or a bunch of smaller ones targeted at specific niches and programming styles? # If there are to be a bunch, should they just be conceptually similar (e.g. all based on the actor model), or should there be interoperability among them?

Magic Lantern Firmware Wiki for 5D Mark II

by sbrothier (via)
Magic Lantern is an open platform for developing enhancements to the amazing Canon 5D Mark II full frame digital SLR. This camera is a "game changer" for independent film makers: * It allows the use of a wide range of lenses (anything that can be adapted to the EF mount). * The 35mm full-frame sensor is larger than the RED ONE's sensor, Super 35 film. It is approximately the size of VistaVision. This means shallower native depth-of-field than anything on the market, except for the Phantom 65. * The dynamic range and latitude are close to the capabilities of high-end HD cameras. * The low-light performance is currently unrivaled, even by the RED ONE.

Culture Mobile

Unfinished trajectories | R2

Unfinished trajectories

This book was part of our installation in Casa da Música, 2007

Unfinished Trajectories (Graphic Instalation in Casa da Música, Porto)

Reflection based on visitors’ emotions and other viewpoints, suggested by the spaces of the Casa da Música. ⁄ The objective is to list, classify, contextualise, build relations and map the respective content.

Experiences represented in various forms that in turn generate a series of unfinished “scores” based on a wide array of details.

This project aims to question standard trajectories and propose new possibilities. New forms of discovering spaces thereby emerge, organised in alphabetical order, by scale, capacity or other criteria...

This is an unfinished project, delivering improbable and sometimes absurd itineraries.

Digital History Hacks (2005-08)

by karlcow

When I began this blog, I had the idea that it would be an integral part of my critical and reflective technical practice. For the past three years, it has served admirably, providing an easy way to share ideas and code and putting me in touch with a wide range of colleagues and new friends. During that time I've tried to stay true to the promise of "hacks," even if I pushed the boundaries of both "digital" and "history". As my technical work has evolved, however, I've begun to feel like this blog is less and less suited to my day-to-day activities. Rather than try and force it to fit, I've decided to build something new.

Images from 1979 - 1992 The images on this page were produced with different types of PC, and photographed from the screen. The works shown here demonstrate once again Franke's wide-ranging interests, which include the use of random-number generators, image-processing, numerically-controlled machine tools, iterative techniques, fractals and even a series of experiments with music produced on the self-constructed wind instrument of colleague Bruno Spoerri.

White Papers and Presentations

by naudjf
The emergence of the World Wide Web has made it possible for individuals with appropriate computer and telecommunications equipment to interact as never before. An explosion of next-generation information systems are flooding the commercial market. This cyberspace convergence of data, computers, networks, and multimedia presents exciting challenges to interface designers. However, this "new technology frontier" has also created enormous roadblocks and barriers for people with disabilities. This panel will discuss specific issues, suggest potential solutions and solicit contributions required to design an accessible Web interface that includes people with disabilities.

hypertext/?="The Metaphor is the Message"

by Neewok

I find that the model of hypertext has become the metaphor via which my thoughts, my research, finds form. I can't read one book at a time. Instead I skip between many, following an annotation in one, buying a bibiliographed reference, dipping into books by the same or similar authors in the bookstore, scribbling notes in one book about another. I make the world my internet; the library my world wide web.
