Character encoding detection for external scripts

by karlcow

This is (EF BB BF) C3 B6 3D 22 21 22 loaded into browsers under various labels. That happens to be properly formed ECMAScript code for all the encodings used. The bogus results for Opera9 can easily be reproduced in context of the testing script, but probably not individually from a clean cache; what's going on there is unknown. I also noted in running these tests that Opera claims "Opera supports the entire ECMA-262 2nd and 3rd standards with no exceptions" while in fact their implementation does not, the parser rejects code that follows the IdentifierStart :: UnicodeEscapeSequence production of ECMA-262 section 7.6. Instead it implements Opera-only extensions, like comma-free arrays ala [ 1 2 3 ]. Other fun facts include: IE does not implement onload for iframes and cannot modify the innerHTML or tr elements; Firefox ignores "tags" when setting the innerHTML of dynamically created tr elements with no ownerElement... Oh and Opera again needs /th "tags" so it won't nest adjacent th elements when setting innerHTML.

NIHONTO-NO-BI: Tsuba I

by sbrothier
Sukashi Tetsu Tsuba These tsuba are made from forged iron (tetsu) plate and have designs or patterns cut into them. Some of the more elaborate could take up to three months to complete. Sukashi work is of two basic types: Ko-sukashi:   in negative relief, where a minor design is cut into the plate (e.g. a cherry blossom); these tsuba were often produced by swordsmiths (tosho) or armour-makers (katchushi or kacchushi), however many were also produced by tsubako of different schools and signed. Ji-sukashi:   in positive relief, where a large amount of the plate is removed, and the design is formed by the plate that remains. There are two forms of ji-sukashi: (a) yo- (you) sukashi, a positive silhouette where metal is removed to leave a solid shape; and (b) kage-sukashi, a type of negative silhouette where only the outline of the design remains, such as with a pencil drawing.

La bonne blague !

our company : teehan+lax

by sbrothier
When we started our business we had a few ideas about where the industry was going and what kind of role we wanted to fill in the marketplace. Using these insights we formed the basis of how we do business and what we do. We witnessed more clients taking a lot of their work in-house, especially on the technology and maintenance side of the business. We believe that there will be very few end-to-end builds like there was two or three years ago. Instead companies are looking to get the most out of the technology and infrastructure they have purchased.

BBC NEWS | Asia-Pacific | China earthquake toll jumps again

by karlcow

Meanwhile, concern is growing over a number of new lakes formed by the force of the earthquake. Thirty-four lakes were created in the province when landslides blocked rivers, Xinhua news agency said. Eight held more than 3 million cubic metres of water and one lake, less than 3km (two miles) from Beichuan town, had doubled in size in four days. Officials are monitoring the lakes and have sent experts to assess them, the agency said. Forecasters predict heavy rain in the region next week, which could further raise the water levels in the lakes.

Ext JS - JavaScript Library

by kasi77 & 21 others
Ext is a client-side, JavaScript framework for building web applications. In early 2006, Jack Slocum began working on a set of extension utilities for the Yahoo! User Interface (YUI) library. These extensions were quickly organized into an independent library of code and distributed under the name "yui-ext." In the fall of 2006, Jack released version .33 of yui-ext, which turned out to be the final version of the code under that name (and under the open source BSD license). By the end of the year, the library had gained so much in popularity that the name was changed simply to Ext, a reflection of its maturity and independence as a layout:'fit',framework. A company was formed in early 2007, and Ext is now dual-licensed under the LGPL and a commercial license. The library officially hit version 1.0 on April 1, 2007.

International Ski School loses trademark case

by pmdm
The Grenoble civil appeals court has ruled against the SIMS (Syndicat international des moniteurs de ski) and its president Philippe Camus in a trademark dispute. The trademarks “Écoles de ski internationale” and “ESI snowboard award école de ski internationale” were registered in 1994 by Michel Vachez an independent ski instructor based at l’Alpe-d’Huez. M. Vachez formed the first ski school independent of the Ecole de Ski Francais (ESF) in 1974. The judgment has forbidden the SIMS from using this trademarks with a 500 € fine for each contravention.

Apsis Gmbh

The Pound program is a reverse proxy, load balancer and HTTPS front-end for Web server(s). Pound was developed to enable distributing the load among several Web-servers and to allow for a convenient SSL wrapper for those Web servers that do not offer it natively. Pound is distributed under the GPL - no warranty, it's free to use, copy and give away. WHAT POUND IS: 1. a reverse-proxy: it passes requests from client browsers to one or more back-end servers. 2. a load balancer: it will distribute the requests from the client browsers among several back-end servers, while keeping session information. 3. an SSL wrapper: Pound will decrypt HTTPS requests from client browsers and pass them as plain HTTP to the back-end servers. 4. an HTTP/HTTPS sanitizer: Pound will verify requests for correctness and accept only well-formed ones. 5. a fail over-server: should a back-end server fail, Pound will take note of the fact and stop passing requests to it until it recovers. 6. a request redirector: requests may be distributed among servers according to the requested URL. Pound is a very small program, easily audited for security problems. It can run as setuid/setgid and/or in a chroot jail. Pound does not access the hard-disk at all (except for reading the certificate file on start, if required) and should thus pose no security threat to any machine.

by kuroyagi
"AOL doesn't have its own search index, but licenses Google's, so an AOL tie-up would likely see Yahoo keep its search and search ad operations. AOL has been investing heavily in advertising technology, adding Tacoda (behavioral targeting), AdTech (ad serving, big in Europe), Lightningcast (video ads), Quigo (contextual ads) and Third Screen Media (mobile ads) to its newly formed Platform A business, built around the base of its Advertising.com ad network."
