Appulous : The iPhone and iPod Touch Application Index

by sbrothier & 3 others
As many iPhone and iPod touch owners have discovered, Apple's iTunes App Store has many flaws which render it useless to the common user. Apple has chosen to allow a multitude of ridiculous, worthless, poorly-represented applications through its "strict" screening process, nearly all written by mediocre programmers with a dream of getting rich quick. Many of these programmers game the reviews system, misrepresent their application in the description, and generally try to swindle the honest buyer. Applications generally do not cost much, but small fees add up. The iPhone/iPod community has wasted so much money on these programs, an epidemic has taken hold where people have simply stopped buying apps they aren't certain of so they don't find themselves purchasing yet another waste of a program.

PHP Bugs: #17079: setlocale changes the internal representation of floats

by night.kame 2 comments

The system uses Oracle for persistence, where the decimal separator is a comma, as is a custom in that country. So numbers came in from Oracle, and then PHP was unable to process them correctly. For example, if a client had a debt of 25,12€, and the client paid 5€, then the comparison ($paid_amount > $debt) said incorrectly that the paid amount was more than the debt. Result: hundreds of wasted man-hours. In the end we recompiled PHP without that "fix".

50 Percent of Food is Wasted Causing Water, Food and Hunger Crisis - SIWI

by karlcow

In the US, for instance, as much as 30 percent of food, worth some USD 48.3 billion, is thrown away. That’s like leaving the tap running and pouring 40 trillion litres of water into the garbage can - enough water to meet the household needs of 500 million people.

Time Well Wasted - Getting Subtitles on your Playstation 3

by macbros
So I suppose I let others know how to get subtitles to play on your PS3. 1. Get a free copy of AVIAddXSubs. This will create a DIVX file of the movie and encode the subtitles into the files also. It doesn’t recode the video, and it takes about a minute or two to create it. 2. Now the latest firmware update on the PS3 was supposed to let you play DIVX files, but for some reason my PS3 was saying the file was Unsupported. I found out that TVersity will overcome that hurdle. So I downloaded it. A nice program too. It has several TV shows you can watch too. 3. When the PS3 starts playing the movie, you just press the Triangle button to display the menu and select the Subtitle option. Select the language and you’re done! If the subtitle files you used were functioning that is.

by karlcow

I remember building an apartment search engine with two friends of mine which was essentially a mashup of Google maps and data drawn from craigslist and move.com. Since I had to scrape a lot of the data to make it work, the xml streams could sometimes be unreliable and I wasted a lot of development time just standardizing room sizes and addresses.

Techdirt: Smartphones Patented... Just About Everyone Sued 1 Minute After Patent Issued

by karlcow

Reading the patent, you realize it describes the quite common smartphone. It's a patent for a mobile phone with removable storage, an internet connection, a camera and the ability to download audio or video files. The patent holding firm who has the rights to this patent wasted no time at all. At 12:01am Tuesday morning, it filed three separate lawsuits against just about everyone you can think of, including Apple, Nokia, RIM, Sprint, AT&T, HP, Motorola, Helio, HTC, Sony Ericsson, UTStarcomm, Samsung and a bunch of others.

Strategy Letter VI - Joel on Software

by mbertier 1 comment (via)
The developers who put a lot of effort into optimizing things and making them tight and fast will wake up to discover that effort was, more or less, wasted, or, at the very least, you could say that it “conferred no long term competitive advantage,” if you’re the kind of person who talks like an economist.

Review Board

by mbertier (via)
For too long, code reviews have been too much of a chore. This is largely due to the lack of quality tools available, leaving developers to resort to e-mail and bug tracker-based solutions. At VMware, we've traditionally done code reviews over e-mail. A significant amount of time was wasted in forming review requests, switching between the diff and the e-mail, and trying to understand what parts of the code the reviewer was referring to. We decided to fix all that.

Student DNA (TM) LearnerDNA (TM)

by dclemons
Student DNA, StudentDNA(TM) and LearnerDNA - represents a learning technology and methodology on how students learn and remember content. These trade names and marks are owned by LearnCast(TM) and LearnKey(R)Inc. Founded in 2003 by members of LearnKey " Alliance Team" led by David Clemons Partner and President of LearnKey Inc. Contact David Clemons onlineexpert1@hotmail.com or David.clemons@learnkey.com StudentDNA is considered the "4th Learning Modality", using visual media content, auditory based feeds, interactive feeds and the 4th Modality - StudentDNA, a learning technology, a science of how students learn based on a unique set of measurements of visual, audio and kinesthetic. Our proprietary learning algorithm is the first measurable learning technology that measures the exact % of visual, audio and kinesthetic modes of learning with once extra proprietary measurement. of personal selection and personal interaction with a learning environment and style. Students learn differently, as unique as a human finger print, each student has a unique learning style and very individualized ability to recall information. StudentDNA, LearnerDNA, represents a simple learning technology that actually discovers how a student learns, how long a student is engaged in learning and when they start “checking out” it also offers solutions to a student who does not understand the content presented. StudentDNA / LearnerDNA Students learn differently, as unique as a human finger print, each student has a unique learning style and very individualized ability to recall information. StudentDNA, LearnerDNA, represents a simple learning technology that actually discovers how a student learns, how long a student is engaged in learning and when they start “checking out” it also offers solutions to a student who does not understand the content presented. Today, classrooms are filled with students who feel lost in understanding the content, unmotivated and or unwilling to learn, not tuned in, disengaged and that they are wasting their time. We all hear this too many times from our students. StudentDNA is an underlying technology that operates in conjunction with content and creates a database of user information that is constantly updated each time a student engages in the system. Through a combination of smart learning algorithms, StudentDNA is constantly assessing the user activity in the following manner: Speed in content delivery response Accuracy of interactive hands on labs User attention span Time engaged The goal of StudentDNA/LearnerDNA is to determine the students balance between visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning modalities. Our goal to constantly validate that our processes are effective and keep the users engaged with content best suited for the student providing a better opportunity for the student of retention of the content. We perform checks and balances that seem invisible to the users yet we pull a constant stream of data on how the student is performing. Examples of how StudentDNA works: 1. The goal of StudentDNA is to provide content to each student with intensity based on the total amount of time that a student can endure and show learning engagement. If the average student averages only 17 minutes of focus when presented educational content, what happens when the student has shut off the learning mode and closed down in 12 minutes? Is the remainder 5 minutes wasted Does the student “check out?” What does the student do when they “check out”? Can a mentor determine who is “checked out” when it happens? StudentDNA is performing checks in the background, watching for gaps in response time, speed of reactions to very simple straight forward presentations, accuracy of simple reoccurrences. The power of studentDNA is measuring student engagement and knows when the student needs a break. When a student disengages from a high level to a low level of input, or response and recall, the system flags a learning alert and creates a series of on screen events such as images, games and exercises as well as a “mentorCall”. The mobile alert system – flags that a student is having focus attention issues. The mentor goes one on one and determines the break and mental status of the user. StudentDNA has both an electronic delivery component for presenting content and a communications component that drives information to mentors who need to monitor where students are.
