Tech Your Universe » PHP vs Java vs C/C for web applications

by kasi77
For the other 99.9% of web applications, scripting languages or C/C is a better choice, and the complexity that Java introduces is despicable, and in my opinion, making the choice for Java is doing a disservice to your company in terms of cost (both development time and hardware).

Compression: gzip vs bzip2 vs 7-zip - Stefan Reuter

by Neewok (via)

7-zip and the algorithm it uses (LZMA) is not that common on UNIX-like operating systems. It is well-known as a free alternative for WinZip on Windows systems and was started back in 1998. For Ubuntu p7zip – a port of 7-zip to POSIX – is available in universe (sudo apt-get install p7zip).

Chaos Magick: an introduction

by borsky
"Chaos Magick derives primarily from the work of Austin Osman Spare and Peter Carroll in the first and third quarters of the 20th Century respectively." (…) "Carroll, writing soon after the development of Chaos Scientific Theory, was equally influenced by the possibilities of using the language and tools of magick as a means to discover and influence the subatomic interactions of the quantum universe. Carroll also founded the Illuminati of Thanateros (the IOT), an Order of Chaos Magicians. The Order is somewhat controversial in the greater community of Chaos magicians since it is a secretive degreed hierarchy. Secrets, degrees, and hierarchies are often considered to run counter to the Chaos current." This page contains 'Excerpts from Chaos: The Broadsheets of Ontological Anarchism by Hakim Bey'.

Will Tomorrow Be The End Of The Universe?

by macbros
You see, there are a bunch of Geeks that have this gigantic toy, the largest machine ever built - a giant, ring-shaped atom smasher called the “Large Hadron Collider” (LHC). The thing is 27 kilometers around and will hurl a few tiny amounts of matter close to light speed in opposite directions around the rings of the LHC. Then, when they’re at full speed, they will cross the beams and smash the matter together inside four giant detectors. Didn’t they ever watch the Ghost Busters? You NEVER cross the beams!

Celestia

by roulian & 16 others
Welcome to Celestia ... The free space simulation that lets you explore our universe in three dimensions. Celestia runs on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. Unlike most planetarium software, Celestia doesn't confine you to the surface of the Earth. You can travel throughout the solar system, to any of over 100,000 stars, or even beyond the galaxy. All movement in Celestia is seamless; the exponential zoom feature lets you explore space across a huge range of scales, from galaxy clusters down to spacecraft only a few meters across. A 'point-and-goto' interface makes it simple to navigate through the universe to the object you want to visit. Celestia is expandable. Celestia comes with a large catalog of stars, galaxies, planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and spacecraft. If that's not enough, you can download dozens of easy to install add-ons with more objects.
