Learning from Shogun

by Takwann (via)
Learning from SHOGUN was distributed by the Japan Society of New York through the good offices of Peter Grilli, and two printings quickly sold out. The authors are pleased to make it available here in PDF format for interested readers and teachers, but please remember that this is copyrighted material and may not be reproduced for more than personal or instructional use. Note that the PDF version is bookmarked for easy access to the separate chapters. We also want to emphasize that Learning from SHOGUN is about Clavell's novel, not about either the TV miniseries or the feature film versions. A postscript to the book does offer my own first impressions of the miniseries, however, of which I was able to see a preview before it appeared on national television.

Prefixes, not that complicated. | Garbage Collection

by karlcow

We were able to come up with rules that make using prefixes in almost any context simpler. Note, these are for the most part AUTHORING guidelines, not requirements when reading:

1. Reusing the same prefix in the same document with different meanings is horribly confusing (”If you did that, I’d break your figures.”). Possible to figure out, but not really desirable. Seems like a reasonable place for a warning.

2. Defining all the prefixes in one place makes it simpler to keep track of them. But understood when it would be simpler to define a new prefix for a section of content.

3. “Couldn’t you have a simple tool that just shows you what prefixes are defined at any point in the document?” How such a tool has failed to exist in the XML world… may write this.

SML Wiki: Interestingness(note: work in progress)

by decembre
Interestingness is a media (images, videos, etc) ranking algorithm to provide as an additional metric for search results. The algorithm is based upon an algorithm created by the Flickr team, and is further enhanced by metadata knowledge resulted from the Del.icio.us development. The algorithm was first unveiled publicly on Flickr on 2005-08-01.1 SML.SML: Interestingness = f(views, faves, comments, tags, time, user, network relationships); The ranking is based on one or more of the following factors: * the quantity of user-entered metadata2 (i.e. tags) * the number of users who have assigned metadata3 * the number of favorites assigned to the photo4 * relationship between the person who uploaded the photo and the people who are commenting5 * access patterns related to the media object6 (i.e. where the clickthroughs are coming from; who comments on it and when)7 * a lapse of time related to the media object8 (i.e. velocity of metadata acquisition)

love thursday: 24 simple ways to show love in the next 24 hours

by blackgoldfish
1. Buy coffee for the guy standing behind you at the coffee shop. 2. Open the door for someone before entering yourself. It doesn't matter if you're a girl and he's a boy, or you're a boy and she's a girl, or you're both boys, or you're both girls. You can do it. 3. Send a quick email to someone you haven't heard from in a while. It can just say, "Hey, I was thinking about you. I hope you're well." Trust me, it will make her day. 4. Send a small, handwritten note -- via regular mail! -- to someone far away. It can just say, "Hey, I was thinking about you. I hope you're well." Trust me, it will make his day. 5. Give someone flowers, just because. They don't have to be expensive. The blossom above was part of a grocery-store bouquet that cost $3.99. The recipient really isn't going to care that it wasn't expensive. I promise. 6. Invite someone to your home. Have something baking in the oven for them when they arrive. 7. Light a candle and think of someone who is going through a rough time. Silently offer them good thoughts/prayers. 8. Pick a charity. Give something. 9. Buy a magazine subscription for a friend out of the blue. 10. Give blood. 11. Prepare someone's tea. In my opinion, it's a wonderful act of love to not just put the hot water and a teabag in front of a friend, but actually prepare and steep the tea for them. 12. Tell a child -- or someone who is struggling with self-esteem -- how great you think they are. And mean it. 13. The next person who serves you a meal at a restaurant, or helps you in a store, or sells you your morning newspaper, look him in the eyes, smile, and say "thank you" with as much sincerity as you can muster. 14. Give someone a heartfelt hug. Just because. 15. Start a hopeful revolution: leave a hope note somewhere. Extra points if you leave it on the windshield of a stranger's car. 16. Offer to cook a meal for someone. 17. Offer to give someone a break -- babysit, hire a maid service for them, or even straighten her house yourself. 18. Clean out your closet. Give the gently-used clothing you no longer want to a shelter. 19. Take a photograph of something beautiful. Send it to someone, with the note: "This reminded me of you." 20. Give someone something of yours -- a book, perhaps, or a small trinket -- with no expectation of return. 21. Blow out a candle. Make a wish on someone else's behalf as you do it. 22. Make a short list of the things you love about someone you love. Leave the list where they can find it. 23. Make a date to have coffee or a glass of wine with an old friend. 24. Say "I love you." Mean it.

An introduction to Iaido to the prospective student

NOTE: Japanese martial arts are very diverse, and so any generalising statement or rule will have exeptions, probably about 50% of the cases. None of the following should be taken as absolute truth.

SIGB - Librarything VS Libfly VS Babelthèque - « Des Bibliothèques 2.0

by decembre

Curious Bird: daily ritual: making a to-do list

by blackgoldfish (via)
everyone has different ways to prepare for things and keep their lives organized -- one of mine is to make lists. lots of lists. It helps me remain calm when I have lots to do. It also keeps me from forgetting simple things like replying to a letter or buying a needed supply. I don't know what I would do if I didn't stop and take the time to make a daily list or add a few things to a post-it note.

Nice Web Type Likes: Graublau Sans with Lucida sanserif

by sbrothier (via)
If your web browser is up to snuff, you’ll see Graublau Sans Web for headings, subheads, and appropriate examples in this specimen page. If not, refer to CSS @font-face support. Please note: IE supports @font-face via fonts converted to .EOT, but because conversion is a hassle I have skipped it in this example. ↩

The Real iPhone 1.0 | Monday Note

by night.kame

That is why I call the latest release 1.0, the complete one, with a tip of the hat to the engineers who, in less than two years, moved the OS from a painfully trimmed down port of OS X to a tiny ARM platform, creating a polished new user interface in the process. And giving birth to a new applications ecosystem, an unforeseen outgrowth of the iTunes platform.

Et encore, il manque la possibilité aux applications tierces de s'exécuter en tâche de fond. Même EPOC proposait le mutlitâche.

The KDE on Windows Project - KDE on Windows News

by tadeufilippini (via)
KDE on Windows News RSS April 7th, 2009 : KDE 4.2.2 for Windows available The KDE on Windows team today announced the immediate availability of "Cano", (a.k.a KDE 4.2.2), another bugfix and maintenance update of the KDE release. New in this release is an unstable snapshot of K3B, the KDE cd burning application. As a service release, the changelog contains a list of bugfixes and improvements. Note that the changelog is usually incomplete, for a complete list of changes that went into KDE 4.2.2, you can browse the Subversion log. KDE 4.2.2 also ships a more complete set of translations. The binary packages could be installed with the installer by using the version "stable 4.2.2" (or "stable latest"). In case you are upgrading your KDE installation, deselect the skip basic settings checkbox on the first installer page and press next until you are guided to the release settings page where you can choose the required version.
