Is Social Taking over Google? - Articles - Baekdal.com

by srcmax & 2 others

This is the new web. It has changed from being a place that you visit, to a place where you are. And it is no longer relevant to measure traffic + referrers. Instead you want to measure influence + communication + reaction.

Controversial Einstein systems to inspect U.S. government's Internet traffic - Network World

The largest U.S. carriers -- including AT&T, Qwest and Sprint -- are deploying special-purpose, intrusion-detection systems dubbed Einstein boxes in their networks as part of an 18-month-old effort to tighten security on federal networks.

Dare Obasanjo aka Carnage4Life - ASP.NET Caching vs. memcached: Seeking Efficient Data Partitioning, Lookup, and Retrieval

by ERSWeb (via)
I recently discovered memcached which is a distributed, object caching system originally developed by Brad Fitzpatrick of LiveJournal fame. You can think of memcached as a giant hash table that can run on multiple servers which automatically handles maintaining the balance of objects hashed to each server and transparently fetches/removes objects from over the network if they aren't on the same machine that is accessing an object in the hash table. Although this sounds fairly simple, there is a lot of grunt work in building a distributed object cache which handles data partitioning across multiple servers and hides the distributed nature of the application from the developer. memcached is a well integrated into the typical LAMP stack and is used by a surprising number of high traffic websites including Slashdot, Facebook, Digg, Flickr and Wikipedia. Below is what C# code that utilizes memcached would look like sans exception handling code

Hitwise Intelligence - Heather Dougherty - US: Who Benefits from Circuit City Closure Online

by kuroyagi
"Both of the retailers are receiving the search traffic from the portfolio of branded terms in opposite ways. For Radioshack.com, 100% of the traffic from the Circuit City Terms was from paid search over the 4 weeks ending April 4, 2009. With Bestbuy.com, all of the search traffic was driven by organic search results during the same timeframe. "

scaling drupal - an open-source infrastructure for high-traffic drupal sites | johnandcailin

by holyver & 1 other
in this article, i outline a step-by-step process for incrementally scaling your deployment, from a simple single-node drupal install running all components of the system, all the way to a load balanced, multi node system with database level optimization and clustering. since you almost certainly don't want to jump straight from your single node system to the mother of all redundant clustered systems in one step, i've broken this down into 5 incremental steps, each one building on the last. each step along the way is a perfectly viable deployment.

Flickr: Discussing Real-time Flickr analytics of any photo page in Flickr Hacks with whos.amung.us/

by decembre
By inserting the non-JS version of the widget into the comment area of your photo page, you can basically be monitoring the live visitor traffic on that photo. The tool's ability to display geographical data about the visitors makes it a great supplement to the Flickr Stats which does not disclose visitors' location. I have only placed this on my top-viewed assets since today so I can't really comment any further about its effectiveness - though I must say that I do find it interesting that while my main sites and blogs receive mostly U.S. traffic, it appears that visitors to my media assets on Flickr are fairly diverse. If that's really the case (and only time will time after I have collected enough data), it will provide a really strong case for marketing... which in turn will explain why what all those yahoo ad servers requests may really be about... (of course that's just a hunch) - but in any case, it's an interesting site to check out.
