So we discussed this challenge of reframing things and some how that lead to a short discussion of parenting — getting kids to try things that they don’t want and disallowing them from doing things they shouldn’t. This point came up directly — “yeah, and they’ll say — can I wash the cat in the toilet?” Somehow this started the story, where we ourselves reversed our assumptions and looked at it from the positive side. How do you encourage unconventional, presumably preposterous things and not assume failed results?

The Universe house by Tatiana Bilbao | Architecture Lab

by karlcow

“A Beach house designed by Tatiana Bilbao for the artist Gabriel Orozco’s family. The house, which has a round pool on the roof, was organized around the conceit of camping. Like a tent, you must exit each room to the exterior in order to get to another room, such as the toilet or kitchen. “For Gabriel, it was not architecture; it’s more of a living sculpture,” Bilbao says, noting that she collaborated with Orozco on realizing the artist’s initial design.” Architectural Record

InfraNet Lab » Blog Archive » Resource Hogs: Greening Prison Infrastructure

by karlcow

Prisons are perhaps the most resource-intensive institutional infrastructures. This is largely a function of the unique nature of the building typology, which requires continuous operation, high levels of lighting (for security) and water consumption (for the inmates). Moreover, prison cells that contain toilet fixtures are required to have exhaust venting, increasing heating and cooling loads and costs. With the number of prisons on the rise in the US, new green initiatives are being explored to offset these resource hogs.

We all now what a map is, its a diagram that tries to represent the real world on a flat piece of paper.if you understand something then you can control it, if you can control it then you own it.The methods of interacting with data have changed, but those producing it haven’t. if they create any new information with reference to the OS maps, like recording the location of every public toilet, then that data is classified as “derived data”. This derived data effectively cannot be shared with anyone who isn’t also licensing data from the OS. Essentially, it means that nearly every government dataset with any kind of location information is under lock and key. OpenStreetMap. If you want truly free data, that you can edit, share and do whatever you want with then pick up a GPS unit and start mapping.

Build a Solar System

by knann (via)
Make a scale model of the Solar System and learn the REAL definition of "space." Enter how big you want to the sun to be in your model (in inches). Press calculate to see how to scale. Here is an example:If you build your solar system on a roll of toilet paper, you can make the Sun about .4 inches (10 mm) across and still fit the entire solar system on the roll. A standard roll of toilet paper has about 450 sheets that are about 4.375 inches long, hence the roll is about 164 feet long. You should check your toilet paper for length. Some are longer.

Chris Ware animation for The American Life TV show

by gregg & 2 others
This cartoon is about schoolkids who started making fake video cameras out of card board boxes and toilet paper tubes to "film" incidents around the schoolyard. Because they had these phony cameras to hide behind, they distanced themselves from each other, losing their concern for the wellbeing of their fellow students. The school administration responded by banning the cameras. It's a perfect story for Ware to animate.
