How We Built Britain opening title sequence | The Art of the Title Sequence

by karlcow

A tangle of utility in both architecture and typography offers a fascinatingly structured title sequence for the BBC’s “How We Built Britain” that bespeaks an acquisitive England. The artificial monuments of type seem proportionally sound, the final title card an achievement of engineering.

Facebook Share/Specifying Meta Tags - Facebook Developer Wiki

by srcmax & 1 other
Facebook Share passes along the URL of your page to our servers, which in turn looks up certain HTML tags within it. Those tags are used to display a preview of the page. In order to provide this preview, we always look for the title of the page, a summary of the main content and an image. If there's media content on the page, those media files are also important to identify.

I had written something these lines a few years ago… Sorry it is in French.

http://www.la-grange.net/2006/04/14 - Un commentaire de trop

But somehow it is a distributed architecture around comments and blogs. If we really think about it a comment, a blog post, and a tweet have the same features usually.

an author, a url (or url-fragment), a text, a date.

blog posts have usually in addition a title and sometimes categories.

futurelib / YeeRDF

by karlcow

Martha asks a number of questions about RDF in the article. Even the title is a question: "Can Bibliographic data be Put Directly onto the Semantic Web?" (Answer: it already is ) Martha is conducting an admirable gedanken experiment about the future of cataloging, creating her own cataloging code and trying to mesh her ideas with concepts coming out of the semantic web community. The article's value is not only in her conclusions but in the questions that she raises. In its unfinished state, Martha's thinking is provocative and just begging for further discussion and development.

WordPress › More Fields « WordPress Plugins

by mozkart & 1 other (via)
More Fields is a WordPress plugin that adds boxes to the Write/Edit page. These boxes contains input fields, so that additional (more) fields can be added to a post. For example, if you write about books, you can add a box where you can enter title and author, etc. The boxes can be placed either to the right or to the left on the Write/Edit page. In addition, the new version of More Fields enables you to define post types, which are custom Write/Edit pages that contains a pre-defined set of boxes. For example, you write about books and you write about your holidays, then you can define a post type 'Book' and a post type 'Holiday' each containing the input boxes relevant to each type of text. You can also set pre-defined categories, tags and templates for each post type.

The International Phonetic Alphabet - limited free version

by ycc2106
The following page provides a graphic interface for exploring the International Phonetic Alphabet. To use the resource simply click on any link to hear an illustrative example. For example, most rows in the Pulmonic chart (Manner of Articulation) have descriptive audio that explains each row completely. Other charts (Non-Pulmonic, Vowels etc.) have detailed audio descriptions available by clicking on the chart title. Within each chart, clicking on any IPA character will play an example of that sound. With consonants, you will hear the sound in exclusion followed by an intervocalic example. You will need a recent browser and QuickTime installed on your computer in order to use the page to the fullest. You will also need a UVic NetLinkID to access these copyrighted materials.

How to Design a Tumblelog Theme for WordPress | Digging into WordPress

by mozkart
Tumblelogs are a great way to streamline mixed-media blogging for different types of content. Commonly used tumblelog topics include “Links”, “Photos”, “Quotes”, “Dialogue”, and “Video”. A good tumblelog presents each these different topics with its own unique format while retaining an overall sense of cohesion throughout the entire design. A good example of this involves the clever way in which titles for “Link-category” posts link to the showcase URL rather than to the post itself. Other post types may be styled with different colors, meta information, and anything else that seems appropriate. Bottom line is that a well-designed tumblelog makes it easy and fun to showcase and organize a wide variety of different content types all in one place. Although I prefer to tumble via my Tumblr account, I have always wanted to integrate the process into WordPress by designing a tumblelog-style theme. So in this brisk tutorial, that’s exactly what we’re going to do. The goals of our Tumble Theme are as follows: Create categories for each content type: Links, Photos, Quotes, Dialogue, and Video Create unique category, single, and index views for each content type Make post title links for the Link category point to the showcase URL instead of the post itself Also provide a link to the post itself (i.e., single view) for posts in the Link category

Advice on designing scientific posters

by karlcow

A one-sentence overview of the poster concept

A scientific poster is a large document that can communicate your research at a scientific meeting, and is composed of a short title, an introduction to your burning question, an overview of your trendy experimental approach, your amazing results, some insightful discussion of aforementioned results, a listing of previously published articles that are important to your research, and some brief acknowledgement of the tremendous assistance and financial support conned from others—if all text is kept to a minimum, a person could fully read your poster in under 10 minutes.
