MP3: Helicentrics Live in Paris | Stones Throw Records
After Madlib was forced to cancel a show in Paris late last year, Malcolm Catto came from London to Paris on a moment’s notice with fellow Heliocentrics Jake Ferguson (bass) and Adey Owasu (guitar) of The Heliocentrics, and stole the show in front of 650 rather frenzied Stones Throw fans. This less-than-ten-minute section of their one hour jam session doesn’t come close to capturing the vibe in the cramped quarters of La Bellevilloise that Saturday, 6th of December 2008.

He discusses this further in his post on influencing the production of public data. So let me throw it open: what do you want your city/county/province/national government to put online for you to play with, and why?

5. Provider<Foo>: you say that the injector must throw an exception at run time, but Guice actually fails at initialization time (or build time if you validate your modules there). Nothing in the spec prevents you from injecting additional types like ServiceReference and Iterable; Guice actually supports injecting collections of bindings via multibindings as an optional feature.

Bre Pettis | I Make Things - Bre Pettis Blog - The Cult of Done Manifesto
- There are three states of being. Not knowing, action and completion.
- Accept that everything is a draft. It helps to get it done.
- There is no editing stage.
- Pretending you know what you're doing is almost the same as knowing what you are doing, so just accept that you know what you're doing even if you don't and do it.
- Banish procrastination. If you wait more than a week to get an idea done, abandon it.
- The point of being done is not to finish but to get other things done.
- Once you're done you can throw it away.
- Laugh at perfection. It's boring and keeps you from being done.
- People without dirty hands are wrong. Doing something makes you right.
- Failure counts as done. So do mistakes.
- Destruction is a variant of done.
- If you have an idea and publish it on the internet, that counts as a ghost of done.
- Done is the engine of more.

Near Future Laboratory » Blog Archive » The Map Is Here For You To Use
Departing Madrid early on a Sunday morning, I found this paper map of the Metro, tucked neatly within the seams of a pre-fab wall, ready for re-use. I wondered, who was on their way out of Madrid, thinking that they could not in good conscience throw away their worn map, looking about for a way to pass it along to another visitor.
Another instance of a Thoughtful Act.
Why do I blog this? Sudden interest in observing improvisatory social practices which are signals of a sort, not always of a “service” or designed object to adopt that practice into a commodified instantiation. But sometimes merely a curiosity that helps us better understand who we/people are, like waypoints along a contour of individual and collective humanities.
the interesting thing with the map offered here is that it is an pseudo anonymous gift. At an instant t when the map has been put, the local people around the person may have identified the gesture and see the person (unlikely but let's say they have at least seen the act) BUT the people who will benefit of it in the further instant have probably no connection at all with the source.
A signature (automatic or not) defines a contract that tie to all kind of responsibilities and legibility which are not necessary beneficial for the group as large. The anonymous nature is defined by the time span and the a-connection between the two events (giving the map/receiving the map). Both gestures will be locally identified but the odds of being connected very small. On the Web, the odds of connection are very high and change completely the social dynamics of giving and sharing information. The network has a "memory" of the context.
Energy Seed by Sungwoo Park & Sunhee Kim » Yanko Design
Energy seed. Une lampe à led urbaine très maline qui tire partie des piles usagées
the Energy Seed, an LED lamp post powered by trashed alkaline batteries.
The idea is to encourage people to throw their batteries away into the Energy Seed. There’s a slot for nearly every size battery. The unit combines any left over juice from all the batteries to power a super efficient LED ring.

RSA Arts & Ecology - Francesca Galeazzi: Artist behaving badly
But with that I wanted to throw a comment on why society is so resistant to change. Instead of embracing change, we are inventing new mechanisms to greenwash our consciences, in a way. I didn’t want to say that carbon offsetting is bad because I believe it plays a role within our strategy to tackle climate change. But not as a starting point. It can come in when we’ve done all we can to reduce carbon emissions, all we can to think about the way we use resources, recycle, we produce waste. Only then we can begin to offset our carbon emissions… but not at the start.

I Just Quit My Job... Am I Crazy? - Harvard Business Online's Conversation Starter
:)I did the unthinkable yesterday. In the midst of this economic turbulence we're facing, I decided to leave my job to pursue some long-neglected passions of mine: studying foreign language, teaching, and something so self-indulgent I can hardly bear to utter it (writing). What I'm leaving behind is admittedly a middling (but respectable) career in publishing, but one, from the point of view of the working class people I grew up with, you just wouldn't throw away. My parents didn't go to college, and to them "pissing away" a decent salary is about as stupid a move as you can make.
