The Plenitude - The MIT Press

by karlcow

We live with a lot of stuff. The average kitchen, for example, is home to stuff galore, and every appliance, every utensil, every thing, is compound—composed of tens, hundreds, even thousands of other things. Although each piece of stuff satisfies some desire, it also creates the need for even more stuff: cereal demands a spoon; a television demands a remote. Rich Gold calls this dense, knotted ecology of human-made stuff the "Plenitude." And in this book—at once cartoon treatise, autobiographical reflection, and practical essay in moral philosophy—he tells us how to understand and live with it.

Disco

by greut

Disco is an open-source implementation of the Map-Reduce framework for distributed computing. As the original framework, Disco supports parallel computations over large data sets on unreliable cluster of computers.

The Disco core is written in Erlang, a functional language that is designed for building robust fault-tolerant distributed applications. Users of Disco typically write jobs in Python, which makes it possible to express even complex algorithms or data processing tasks often only in tens of lines of code. This means that you can quickly write scripts to process massive amounts of data.

Disco was started at Nokia Research Center as a lightweight framework for rapid scripting of distributed data processing tasks. This far Disco has been succesfully used, for instance, in parsing and reformatting data, data clustering, probabilistic modelling, data mining, full-text indexing, and log analysis with hundreds of gigabytes of real-world data.

Erlang + Python = complete beautifulness

Setting Up A High-Availability Load Balancer (With Failover and Session Support) With HAProxy/Heartbeat On Debian Etch | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials

by camel & 1 other
This article explains how to set up a two-node load balancer in an active/passive configuration with HAProxy and heartbeat on Debian Etch. The load balancer sits between the user and two (or more) backend Apache web servers that hold the same content. Not only does the load balancer distribute the requests to the two backend Apache servers, it also checks the health of the backend servers. If one of them is down, all requests will automatically be redirected to the remaining backend server. In addition to that, the two load balancer nodes monitor each other using heartbeat, and if the master fails, the slave becomes the master, which means the users will not notice any disruption of the service. HAProxy is session-aware, which means you can use it with any web application that makes use of sessions (such as forums, shopping carts, etc.). From the HAProxy web site: "HAProxy is a free, very fast and reliable solution offering high availability, load balancing, and proxying for TCP and HTTP-based applications. It is particularly suited for web sites crawling under very high loads while needing persistence or Layer7 processing. Supporting tens of thousands of connections is clearly realistic with todays hardware. Its mode of operation makes its integration into existing architectures very easy and riskless, while still offering the possibility not to expose fragile web servers to the Net."

Canonical Releases Storm as Open Source | Ubuntu

by pvergain
New Python-based database communication tool represents first open source component of Launchpad LONDON, July 9, 2007 – Canonical Ltd today announced the release of Storm, a generic open source object relational mapper (ORM) for Python. Storm is designed to support communication with multiple databases simultaneously. Canonical is best known for the popular Ubuntu operating system and Launchpad, a web-based collaboration platform for open source developers. "Storm is an ORM that simplifies the development of database-backed applications in Python, especially for projects that use very large databases or multiple databases with a seamless web front-end", said Gustavo Niemeyer, lead developer of Storm at Canonical. "Storm is particularly designed to feel very natural to Python programmers, and exposes multiple databases as /stores/ in a clean and easy to use fashion." The project has been in development for more than a year for use in Canonical projects such as Launchpad, and is now publicly available under the LGPL license. This will be the first complete Launchpad component to be released as open source software. "We're excited about using Storm for Launchpad, and that it is being released as open source. Storm's API is clear and well designed, making it a joy to work with, " said Steve Alexander, Launchpad Product Manager at Canonical. "The scalability advantages of Storm's architecture are important for us to ensure that Launchpad continues to perform well as the number of Launchpad users grows." Launchpad currently includes developers data for several thousand projects and is used by tens of thousands of developers, translators, and other free software contributors. The Storm project welcomes participation, and has a new website at http://storm.canonical.com. That site includes a tutorial, and links to allow developers to download, report bugs and join the mailing list.

Paul Allen: Internet Entrepreneur » Prediction: Facebook will be the largest social network in the world

by mozkart (via)
Facebook has 24 million active users (meaning they’ve used the site in the last 30 days–I like how they aren’t overstating numbers like SecondLife) and 50% of them login each day. Mark says the next most active social network is not more than 15%. Last fall as I taught Internet Marketing at BYU we learned that a UCLA survey showed that 50% of college age females said Facebook was their #1 most important web site (even more than Google, Wikipedia, or anything else) and that 1/3 of college age males said it was their #1. Look how many “addicts” Facebook has, according to Quantcast. 63% of visits are from addicts. eBay is only 56%. Facebook is adding 100,000 new users per day. That’s 3% growth per month. And the fastest growing segment is over age 25. At this rate, they’ll have 50 million users by the end of this year, and 75% of them will be out of college. I read just on paidcontent.org that Facebook is the fastest growing social network in the UK, and today Mark said that 10% of Canada’s population is using it. With 40 billion pages view per month, Facebook has passed eBay in page views, and is now in 6th place, just behind Google. So this is no small thing for a 3 year old web site. Facebook is absolutely for real. I like Facebook a lot; while I can’t stand MySpace. Facebook is clean and nicely designed and architected. MySpace in my opinion is messy and mostly full of garbage. Facebook is a real social network for real people. And it is really, really popular. And it’s growth will be dramatically accelerated by the Platform announcement. If Facebook is adding 100,000 new users per day with its own few simple applications (like its photo sharing, a very simple service that has given Facebook twice as many photos as all other photo sharing sites combined), what will happen when thousands or tens of thousands of developers start building apps in Facebook and marketing them to more users?

MegaBuzz

MegaBuzz Launches Site That Rewards Community for Creating Buzz Seattle startup puts a new spin on questions and answers SEATTLE – March 20, 2007 – MegaBuzz (http://www.MegaBuzz.com) today beta-launched its Web site, where users can ask questions, share opinions, and choose sides on hot topics for points and prizes. MegaBuzz fills a gap in the social media space by bringing together people, viewpoints, and money. The MegaBuzz experience is based on dynamic, user-generated content that gets the community buzzing. MegaBuzz ensures an abundant supply of fresh, creative content by providing prizes and prestige for the authors who generate the most buzz. As at heavily trafficked sites such as Yahoo! Answers and Digg, the community is in control of the content at MegaBuzz, deciding which topics are hot. "The more compelling and provocative the questions, the greater the community interest and the more benefits to the author," said Ashish Pandey, MegaBuzz president and founder. "Certainly we expect the hottest topics in politics, sports, and entertainment will bubble to the top. Buzz is created when a question catches fire. It could be about a familiar topic, but from an unexpected angle, and instantly the whole community is talking," added Pandey. Many sites already connect people by encouraging profile hopping, but the MegaBuzz approach is unique. MegaBuzz puts together people who participate in similar topics and determines whether they are “friends or foes." As the user base grows, MegaBuzz plans to add features to help communities form organically, around common interests. "No other place on the Web rewards community members - with social contacts and prizes - for engaging in the latest in news, entertainment, sports, or any interest of their choice," he said. MegaBuzz has a unique formula – people, opinions, and prizes - that will be very attractive to the tens of millions of online users who already participate in creating buzz, sweepstakes, and social networks. "If you like sharing opinions, connecting with people, and winning money, we've got something for you," said Pandey. For additional information about MegaBuzz.com, contact Melissa Albert, Director of Marketing, at 206-898-6788 or Melissa@MegaBuzz.com. ABOUT MEGABUZZ: MegaBuzz (http://www.MegaBuzz.com) is an online community where people come together to join in the buzz: asking questions on topics of interest, picking sides, and sharing opinions. It was founded by a group of Expedia.com veterans and is based in Seattle. MegaBuzz is in beta mode and has been funded by leading Seattle-based angel investors including Erik Blachford, ex-CEO of Expedia and Interactive Travel.
