Project plans and process ignorance

Project managers live and die by the project plan. It’s their bible. We know it like the back of our hand and we assume that everyone on the team does too, but to my surprise this is rarely the case.

Unfortunately, this lack of knowledge can reduce the effectiveness of the team, negatively impacting cost, time and performance. This article will explore the problem and suggest ways to remedy it.

In contrast with my earlier attempts at migrating to git, mercurial was actually a joy to setup on the server. WSGI, using our existing .htusers file from Trac, a small config script, done. This contrast to git which would require some funky SSH sandboxing and/or PAM setup - yes it can be done, but such hacks shouldn't be needed.

To all our surprise "hg clone" was extremely fast even compared to subversion and especially in comparison to git.

One last thing: Google also thinks inside a box (the browser). I felt this a lot, and was another reason I left. (too constrained) It’s no surprise that they push to extend what the browser can do. (Gears, Earth plugin)

Nearly all of my experimental works (and some of the mainstream ones) composed since 1995 were developed by incorporating (to varying degrees) two main principles/thought processes:

1. Non-linearity: or fractal, controls the surprise, the unexpected, and is achieved by the Fractal Würfelspiel;
2. Linearity: maintains the flow and carries a listener through a work. This is delivered by recursive (fractal, self-affine) applications of the Golden Section

Quelle n’aura donc pas été ma surprise de tomber sur un site, émanant de l’Orange Lab, proposant plus ou moins exactement le même concept que le notre, et allant jusqu’à en reprendre des codes graphiques et des éléments interactifs.

Aujourd'hui, notre confrère allemand Philipp Lenssen a eu la surprise de recevoir, par courrier, une bande dessinée. Tout indique quelle a été envoyée par Google. A moins que ce ne soit le hoax du siècle, les informations dévoilées dans cette BD sont plus qu'intéressantes.

Bon, finalement ce sera pour mercredi. Les langues commencent à se délier, et il semble que ce problème de communication vienne du fait que la vitesse à laquelle ce courrier adressé à Philipp Lenssen est arrivé en a surpris plus d'un...

It’s like if I was to concede that a benevolent dictatorship is a far more effective model for a political system than a liberal democracy. The problems you hit in that context is when the dictatorship slides from benevolence (or effectiveness), or you need a new dictator in a hurry.

Studies show that people who sleep between 6.5 hours and 7.5 hours a night, as they report, live the longest. And people who sleep 8 hours or more, or less than 6.5 hours, they don't live quite as long. There is just as much risk associated with sleeping too long as with sleeping too short. The big surprise is that long sleep seems to start at 8 hours. Sleeping 8.5 hours might really be a little worse than sleeping five.
