CISSM - Center for International and Security Studies at Maryland |

by karlcow

Whether for private financial gain (e.g., by narcotics and arms traffickers) or for harmful political aims (e.g., by insurgents, terrorists, and other violent extremists), these illicit operations are most successful -- and most dangerous -- when their perpetrators have a place or situation that can provide refuge from efforts to combat or counter them. Such places and situations are often called safe havens, and potential safe havens are sometimes called ungoverned areas.

Donc si je comprends bien un endroit sécurisé n'est pas un endroit protégé. :)

25 Years of Macintosh : AAPLinvestors

by kasi77 (via)
Apple announced during the 1984 Super Bowl that on January 24th, 1984 will not be like 1984. It was on this day that the first commercially successful personal computer to feature a mouse and a graphical user interface rather than a command line interface would be sold. And it was called “Macintosh”. Bill Gates in addition to what he said in the clip above, also said “The next generation of interesting software will be done on the Macintosh, not the IBM PC.” La petite vidéo de Bill Gates est à voir !

1972 munich olympics

by topdos
This site is an online resource of the 1972 Munich Olympics. It showcases the visual identity of the Munich Olympics through Otl Aicher and his teams’ iconic designs. They are a source of inspiration that will be shown here in a comprehensive fashion. _One of the cultural mile-stones in the field of visual communication, the design of the XXth Olympiad was so successful that it articulated to multi-lingual and mutli-cultural audiences which had never been done so well before. The pictogram system which was devised by Aicher and his team for the games was the perfect example of simplistic information design and has now become the universal standard. _Please check back for new items, this site is constantly being updated.

MD5 considered harmful today

by karlcow
This successful proof of concept shows that the certificate validation performed by browsers can be subverted and malicious attackers might be able to monitor or tamper with data sent to secure websites. Banking and e-commerce sites are particularly at risk because of the high value of the information secured with HTTPS on those sites. With a rogue CA certificate, attackers would be able to execute practically undetectable phishing attacks against such sites.

Musings of an Anonymous Geek » Blog Archive » How Are You Staffing Your Startup?

by karlcow

Some seem to have given almost zero consideration to the fact that their application might become successful, and its availability might become quite critical. They haven’t given much thought to things like backups or disaster recovery. They have no plan for how to deploy their application such that when it comes time to scale, it has some hope of doing so without large amounts of downtime, or huge retooling efforts.

pas seulement pour la partie technique, mais malheureusement pour la partie commerciale et communication

IT DOESN’T MATTER IF YOU LIKE IT

Yes it doesn’t matter. Some of my most effective and successful designs from an analytics/statistics standpoint are not ones that I particularly like. That is because I am not the user, and I think and interpret visuals differently than psychology scholars (or any other given user base)

follow the link to the experiment made by Drupal, nice idea very nice.

COCA MARIANI

by sbrothier & 1 other
Today we have a cocaine problem in our country. This problem is no newcomer to the American scene. At the turn of the century, coca was added to many over-the-counter products. It was widely advertised and freely available at the local drug store. Indeed there were groups who warned of its effects and fought against its use but the population at large with easy access and probably little understanding continued using the these tonics and stimulants often to the point of addiction. At least some of the time the public was not aware of the addition of cocaine as one of the ingredients. Of all the coca products none was more flagrant in their advertising or more successful in their sales than Coca Mariani, a dangerous combination of wine and coca extract. The "Popular French Tonic," as it was called was billed as a "Tonic Stimulant" and they claim was used in Hospitals, Public and Religious Institutions.
