Building Collapses in New York: Google Street View Shows a Crack

by karlcow

Images of the fallen building were quickly posted to photo-sharing sites Twitpic (Twitpic) (here and here) and Yfrog (here and here). But what makes this story more intriguing is that the imagery on Google Maps Street View clearly shows a large crack running up the front of the building (below)

walking papers lives (tecznotes)

by karlcow

OpenStreetMap, the wiki-style map of the world that anyone can edit, is in need of a new way to add content. I've been working on a way to "round trip" map data through paper, to make it easier to perform the kinds of eyes-on-the-street edits that OSM needs now the most, as well as distributing the load by making it possible for legible, easy notes to be shared and turned into real geographical data.

Walking Papers is a working service that implements this paper idea, based on initial technical experimentation from back in February.

Major Street View Upgrade - 3D Features | Google Earth Blog

by srcmax
Google has just released an update to their Street View application - as viewed in the browser-based Google Maps (not yet available in Google Earth). The update has not yet been announced, and the new features may not be deployed to all country versions of Google Maps yet (based on reports I've had from GEB readers).

Op-Ed Contributor - For Sale - The $100 House - NYTimes.com

by karlcow

Buying that first house had a snowball effect. Almost immediately, Mitch and Gina bought two adjacent lots for even less and, with the help of friends and local youngsters, dug in a garden. Then they bought the house next door for $500, reselling it to a pair of local artists for a $50 profit. When they heard about the $100 place down the street, they called their friends Jon and Sarah.

vitostreet » Un stand pas comme les autres durant la Nuit du street art

by kruty (via)

by dszalkowski

2point8 » Ways of Working

by karlcow

Ways of Working is a series of articles I wrote in 2005 about the practice of street photography. The pieces are highly subjective, and are the result of much shooting, note taking, and general time wasting. I hope they prove to be of value, however small. Thanks for reading.

BLDGBLOG: Earthquakes on Street View

by karlcow

Imagine, though, owning the building centered directly over the earthquake that destroys your whole city... And imagine the weird derived value such a property might hold in the future for disaster enthusiasts.

You go to purchase a small house at 3706 W. 106th Street in Los Angeles – only to find that you've been outbid, by several orders of magnitude, approaching $50 million, by an earthquake enthusiast in Japan. He or she has gone around the world purchasing epicenters, strange plots of land in the middle of nowhere that have no apparent use or distinction other than that they figure into the unfolding seismic history of our planet's surface.

It's an otherwise unknown subculture that has remained camouflaged within the international property market.

Spoke-o-dometer Overview - Open Source Urbanism

by karlcow

This project involves creating a Persistence Of Vision (POV) device for mounting on a bike wheel. There are a few of these devices already on the market (and we've bought a couple to experiment with); this project differs in that it combines a basic bike meter with the POV readout. The device will display speed and total distance travelled. Unlike standard bike computers, this information isn't displayed for the cyclist but broadcast to other people in the street. By making this information public we give the cyclist's activities greater 'visibility' within the urban environment.

The Kitchen

by karlcow

Well before Soho became SOHO, there was the West Village, an urban network of lower and middle class dwellers, merchants, craftsmen, intellectuals and artists in the infrastructure of city parks, small restaurants, cafes and theaters. In time, this cultural stronghold of the Lower West Side fell into decline and one of the last flagships of the performing arts was, for a short time, located at the Mercer Arts Center, an assembly of small theaters facing Mercer street in what was the old Hotel Central.

Helenbeck Gallery

by rikuniaku97
This exhibition (the largest of this kind in NY) will explore the transition from the New York underground subculture scene to the mainstream. Important photographers who have documented rare scenes of the street art movement will be represented in the show: Martha Cooper, Henry Chalfant, Jamel Shabazz and Silvio Magaglio. The first generation artists of the street scene in New York during the 1970’s and 80’s: Blade, Crash, Daze, JonOne, Lee Quinoñes, Quik , Rammellzee and Sharp will produce fresh works alongside their European contemporaries: Victor Ash, Banksy, Blek le Rat, Ikon, Sozy One and sculptor, Plateus who have since entered the pantheon.
