Mute.com: Various (Mute) - Mute Audio Documents 1978-1984

by Neewok

Mute emerged in the post-punk era. It was a new era of pop democracy, and anyone could make a record. You didn't even need to know three chords, according to Mute founder Daniel Miller. All you needed, he said, was an idea. His 'idea' was to create a classic of DIY pop - a double A sided 7" single featuring the songs T.V.O.D. and Warm Leatherette. He called himself The Normal, designed a sleeve with Letraset, stuck the name Mute on it, and accidentally started a record label.

Free Music Archive

by garret & 1 other
Not to be confused with the Live Music Archive (see the MP3 Hub section, above), the Free Music Archive is a new (in 2009) resource of free and legal MP3s that was launched by the venerable NYC-area public radio station, WFMU (which is, you should know, the longest-running free-form radio station in the US). The Free Music Archive describes itself as "a social music website built around a curated library of free, legal audio." Featuring downloadable songs placed online by WFMU, KEXP, and a handful of other interesting musical organizations, the Free Music Archive can be browsed by curator or genre, but you have to thumb through a lot--there are no easy indexes to get a broad look at the offerings. And while the site claims to have more than 5,000 MP3s available, what's here is decidedly idiosyncratic. Still, as a large repository of free and legal MP3s, it's worth a visit every now and then. People's Music Store: Build Your Own Record Shop

by garret (via)
"People's Music Store is a newly launched DIY online music store. It was created by the founder of MP3 reseller Bleep.com, Ged Day. People's Music Store styles itself as "the first music store entirely powered by music fans." Basically the service allows you to set up your own custom-designed record store, with music chosen from a catalogue of indie record labels (so far no major record label music). The idea is that you earn points, equivalent to 10% of the price of the single, EP or album that you sell. These points can only be used to buy other music items on the People's Music Store site. There are more than 650 stores currently, with over 250,000 songs in the catalogue - most appear to be available at $0.99 per song or $8.99 per album. The site claims to be "working with" 4,500 labels, including 4AD, XL, Rough Trade, Matador, Dominio, and Ged Day's own Warp. Other than the lack of major label music, there is another minor annoyance for those of us who don't live in the U.S. - international users will frequently run into a "we're sorry, but this release is not available in your country" message. However on the plus side, all the music available for download is DRM-free and at high quality 320Kbps." [reawriteweb]

Tim Schwartz - Card Catalog

by karlcow

A card catalog designed to hold all of the songs on my iPod, 7,390 songs. Each song is cataloged on a single card. The cards are organized in reverse chronological order, that is the songs I listened to most recently are in the front of the catalog, and the songs I haven’t listened to in two years exist at the back. The piece is seven feet long when closed and just under fourteen feet when opened.

bolachas grátis. » Blog Archive » Madeleine Peyroux - Bare Bones [2009]

by Neewok

Smoky voiced singer Madeleine Peyroux’s earthy new album ‘Bare Bones’ will be released March 10, 2009 on Rounder Records. Peyroux — who’s achieved critical notice and sales success with her signature “postmodernist coolness” (LA Times) — had a hand in writing all the songs on ‘Bare Bones,’ including collaborations with album producer Larry Klein, Walter Becker, Julian Coryell, Joe Henry, David Batteau and Sean Wayland. One song, “I Must Be Saved,” was written entirely by Peyroux. With ‘Bare Bones,’ Peyroux has crafted her best album yet, an artistic breakthrough that finds her sublime voice wrapped around a collection of songs that she helped craft from their inception, marking her evolution as a songwriter.
