HTML5 isn't a standard yet - W3C Q&A Weblog

by night.kame 3 comments

I did notice however several mentions of the "HTML5 standard" that led me to write this post to remind the community of the current status of the specification, both in practice and on the standards track.. HTML5 isn't a W3C standard. We certainly look forward to the day when it is, but it isn't yet. In fact, the specification, co-authored by Ian Hickson from Google, is still very much a work in progress.

W3C WD: HTML Dialects: Internet Media Types and SGML Document Types

by karlcow

The HTML 2.0 specification, RFC1866, defines an SGML application and an Internet media type. The specification notes that extensions are planned, but only the text/html; level=2 internet media type and the "-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN" document type are defined. This document suggests the use of URIs as system identifiers for document type definitions, allowing decentralized evolution of the language. The use of marked sections as a transition technique and the continued use of the level mechanism for standardized points in the evolution path are discussed.

A Lexical Analyzer for HTML and Basic SGML

by karlcow

a self-contained specification of a lexical analyzer that uses automated parsing techniques to handle SGML document types limited to a tractable set of SGML features. An implementation is available as well.

Les parsers HTML5 - La Tortue Cynique / The Cynical Turtle

by karlcow

Bref, on a donc besoin d'un parser spécifique (après 30 ans à travailler avec des parsers génériques GML et SGML),

AsciiDoc Home Page

by parmentierf & 1 other
AsciiDoc is a text document format for writing short documents, articles, books and UNIX man pages. AsciiDoc files can be translated to HTML and DocBook markups using the asciidoc(1) command. AsciiDoc is highly configurable: both the AsciiDoc source file syntax and the backend output markups (which can be almost any type of SGML/XML markup) can be customized and extended by the user.

Make your Data Web Friendly - W3C Q&A Weblog

by greut (via)

A Web language is not only a markup language (be XML, SGML or binary). For example, JPEG is not a Web format, but a format used on the Web. A Web format has the capability to play into the Web, it has linking capabilities.

Re: Error handling: yes, I did mean it from Joe English on 1997-04-21 (w3c-sgml-wg@w3.org from April 1997)

This proposal does sound appealing, but I agree with the others that it's too draconian.

CPAN v DTD (spoiler: CPAN loses)

by karlcow
Tentatives ratées de parser la dtd de HTML4 avec des modules de CPAN. Les modules ont certaines erreurs. En revanche html4 est une dtd sgml donc un parseur xml pourrait avoir des problèmes.

XML Alternatives

Here goes a list of markup/data serialization languages, influenced (or not) by XML / SGML

XHTML - Wikipédia

by pvergain

HTML 4.01 Specification

by pvergain & 6 others
This specification defines the HyperText Markup Language (HTML), the publishing language of the World Wide Web. This specification defines HTML 4.01, which is a subversion of HTML 4. In addition to the text, multimedia, and hyperlink features of the previous versions of HTML (HTML 3.2 [HTML32] and HTML 2.0 [RFC1866]), HTML 4 supports more multimedia options, scripting languages, style sheets, better printing facilities, and documents that are more accessible to users with disabilities. HTML 4 also takes great strides towards the internationalization of documents, with the goal of making the Web truly World Wide. HTML 4 is an SGML application conforming to International Standard ISO 8879 -- Standard Generalized Markup Language [ISO8879].

XML.com: SML: Simplifying XML

by karlcow
there are those that are thinking beyond this simplification of SGML into XML, and are pushing for an even simpler standard. Simple Markup Language (SML) is the newly-coined name for a de facto stripped-down variant of XML being used by two groups of developers.

Browse Amazon Books: Extensible Mark-up Language - XML

by access2
XML is a flavor of SGML used for machine-to-machine communications, such as RSS feeds. It is more structured than HTML and a bit verbose. XHTML is an XML vocabulary which is the coming web standard. XML can be transformed (XSLT) using stylesheets (XSL).
