HTML5, however, exposes the varying state of the tree throughout; an application may examine a new element's parent pointer at one point, find one value, and then examine it after new events have been processed and find a different value. The very nature of SAX events prohibits that degree of flexibility.

Gestion du XML en PHP 5 : utiliser DOM

DOM est une interface du standard XML, qui permet une gestion organisée de la structure d'un document XML. Elle est en quelque sorte complémentaire de SAX, qui permet une gestion événementielle (et qui est sans doute plus adaptée à des documents XML de grande taille). En PHP4, DOM était implémentée dans l'extension php_domxml, qui était identifiée dans la documentation comme expérimentale, et susceptible de disparaître. D'ailleurs certaines fonctionnalités, comme la validation XML/DTD, ne remplissaient pas tout à fait leur rôle... Cette extension a été remaniée pour PHP 4.3.0. En PHP5 l'extension DOM a été modifiée, et intégrée dans la distribution. Les noms de fonctions ne sont plus tout à fait les mêmes mais bien sûr l'esprit reste identique puisque c'est la même interface qui est implémentée.

Unless you've been hiding in a cave for the last few years, you've heard about XML - it's the toolkit that more and more Web publishers are switching to for content markup. You may even have seen an XML document in action, complete with user-defined tags and markup, and you might have wondered how on earth one converts that tangled mess of code into human-readable content.
The answer is, not easily.
While PHP has included support for the two standard methods of parsing (read: making sense of) XML - SAX and DOM - since version 4.0, the complexity and inherent geekiness of these methods often turned off all but the most dedicated XML developers. All that has changed, however, with PHP 5.0, which introduces a brand-spanking-new XML extension named SimpleXML that takes all (and I do mean all) the pain out of processing XML documents. SAX is an event-driven model for processing XML. Rather than building a complete representation of the document, a SAX parser fires off a series of events as it reads the document from beginning to end. Those events are passed to event handlers, which provide access to the contents of the document.

It was designed to help Web application designers implement cross-platform, client-side manipulation of XML data without having to resort to proprietary platform-limiting solutions. It includes extensive documentation on both its DOM and SAX parsers as well as a host of tools, sample applications, and test suites to aid in developing applications based on its technology.
