H&FJ News | Hoefler & Frere-Jones

by sbrothier
Most graphic designers choose the fonts that best fit their projects. Brian Hennings does the opposite: he chooses the projects that best fit the fonts. A resident designer at H&FJ, Brian shares with me the responsibility of creating all of the sample art you’ll find on this site. His is a strange universe of the fictitious: signage programs for mythical cities, book jackets for unwritten novels, product literature for items you cannot buy, broadcast graphics for live sporting events that you can’t quite identify.

Fleshmap: Listen: Music

by karlcow

What do we sing about, when we sing about the body? The chart below, based on a sample of thousands songs, tells the story. The size of a circle corresponds to how often that part is mentioned in each genre. Click on a genre name to see a close-up that shows exactly what words were used.

Amazon - Constrained Search vs. Random Results

by access2
The way to find needles in the immense haystack of Amazon.com is through constrained search. Amazon's search function, like most others, claims to use a logical AND operator on keywords. That is search results for "Amazon Warriors," for example, should contain both "Amazon" AND "Warriors." In fact, you will find that, all things being equal -- "Amazon" AND "Warriors" results will appear higher than "Amazon" OR "Warriors" results. You need to "drill down" through the thousands of Amazon Categories to find the results that meet your criteria. I could go on and on (there really are thousands of categories) but I think this small sample will illustrate how different your results can be for a single search term

Posterous - The place to post everything. Just email us. Dead simple blog by email.

by ycc2106 & 6 others
Posterous lets you post things online fast using email. You email us at post@posterous.com and we reply instantly with your new posterous blog. If you can use email, you can have your own website to share thoughts and media with friends, family and the world. What can I send to posterous? You can attach any type of file and we'll post it along with the text of your email. We'll do smarter things for photos, MP3's, documents and video (both links AND files). Here's just a sample of what we support. What do you do when I attach photos to an email? If you attach one photo (of any size, even direct from your camera!), we'll resize it to a web-friendly size and post it. If you attach more than one photo in the same message, we automatically create a good looking image gallery like this one:

Gunkanjima Island | Architecture Lab

by karlcow

“Off the westernmost coast of Japan, is an island called ‘Gunkanjima’ that is hardly known even to the Japanese. Long ago, the island was nothing more than a small reef. Then in 1810, [with] the chance discovery of coal … people came to live here, and through coal mining the reef started to expand continuously. Befor [sic] long, the reef had grown into an artificial island of one kilometer (three quarters of a mile) in perimeter, with a population of 5300. Looming above the ocean, it appeared a concrete labyrinth of many-storied apartment houses and mining structures built closely together.
