Box Backup is an open source, completely automatic, on-line backup system. It has the following key features:
* All backed up data is stored on the server in files on a filesystem - no tape, archive or other special devices are required.
* The server is trusted only to make files available when they are required - all data is encrypted and can be decoded only by the original client. This makes it ideal for backing up over an untrusted network (such as the Internet), or where the server is in an uncontrolled environment.
* A backup daemon runs on systems to be backed up, and copies encrypted data to the server when it notices changes - so backups are continuous and up-to-date (although traditional snapshot backups are possible too).
* Only changes within files are sent to the server, just like rsync, minimising the bandwidth used between clients and server. This makes it particularly suitable for backing up between distant locations, or over the Internet.
* It behaves like tape - old file versions and deleted files are available.
* Old versions of files on the server are stored as changes from the current version, minimising the storage space required on the server. Files are the server are also compressed to minimise their size.
* Choice of backup behaviour - it can be optimised for document or server backup.
* It is designed to be easy and cheap to run a server. It has a portable implementation, and optional RAID implemented in userland for reliability without complex server setup or expensive hardware.

A RAID device is a Redundant Array of Independent Disks. The concept was developed in 1987 at UC Berkeley and involves the creation of a virtual disk from multiple small disks in order to deliver improved performance and reliability. There are many flavors of RAID and lots of variations in how to implement it. We detail here a specific instance we use: software RAID1 using IDE disks on a Dell PowerEdge box running Debian "sarge" loaded with grub, managed by mdadm, using the ext3 journaling file system.

The manageability features include new SQL statements for monitoring resource usage by table and account. What happened there? The web is the most successful distributed platform in the world, and it's simple enough for average humans to understand. How come adapting it for use by computer programs requires that smart people spend billions of dollars and devote years of their lives to coming up with all these new standards? And what happened to HTTP and URIs?
The answer is that "Web Services" aren't the web. They're a heavyweight architecture for distributed object access, like COM and CORBA. This architecture is associated with the web, because HTTP is a trendy protocol, and flexible enough that you can implement almost anything on top of it. But it's not really of the web. The architecture of Big Web Services reinvents or ignores every feature that makes the web successful.
This is the book that puts the "web" back into "web services". You can design a web service that uses HTTP, XHTML, and URIs. You just need to understand REST, the architectural principles that drive the web. RESTful Web Services gives you the tools you need to argue for sensible web services, and the strategies and code you need to create them.
The book is manuscript complete at around 440 pages, and it'll be published by O'Reilly in May 2007. We think this can be the definitive work on the real-world use of REST.
