SML Wiki: Interestingness(note: work in progress)

by decembre
Interestingness is a media (images, videos, etc) ranking algorithm to provide as an additional metric for search results. The algorithm is based upon an algorithm created by the Flickr team, and is further enhanced by metadata knowledge resulted from the Del.icio.us development. The algorithm was first unveiled publicly on Flickr on 2005-08-01.1 SML.SML: Interestingness = f(views, faves, comments, tags, time, user, network relationships); The ranking is based on one or more of the following factors: * the quantity of user-entered metadata2 (i.e. tags) * the number of users who have assigned metadata3 * the number of favorites assigned to the photo4 * relationship between the person who uploaded the photo and the people who are commenting5 * access patterns related to the media object6 (i.e. where the clickthroughs are coming from; who comments on it and when)7 * a lapse of time related to the media object8 (i.e. velocity of metadata acquisition)

According to my grandmother: "Have your own life. Pursue your dreams and let your husband do the same. Being content with yourself makes you a better wife." According to my grandfather: "Any disagreement can be settled with two words: 'Yes, dear.' "

We have a thing called "surprise treats." They can be flowers, love notes, our favorite candy, a cool picture, a drawing or a book. It's not usually expensive--just a thoughtful, fun surprise. We wrap them up and hide them, and then call each other and say there's a surprise treat waiting.

The idea is that if there are enough, and they're well hidden, you'll discover new ones (in your pockets, in the luggage) daily throughout your whole trip. It makes being apart a bit more bearable!

my secret to happy relationship - alyson

What makes my relationship with DLB, my partner-in-crime and soon-to-be husband, so special is our friendship. Whether we're singing songs together on a road trip, reading books on a blanket in the park or tasting the newest beer at the local brew pub, it's important to be able to have fun together....Or you could win his heart by baking a peach pie. That one always works. -- Alyson, Unruly Things

Fight hard, laugh harder. This is what works for us. Mr. French and I are ridiculously passionate (emotional) people. If we keep things inside, our relationship suffers. We argue and fight, but always in a respectful way. More importantly, we laugh. I married Mr. French because he was the first man I ever met that made me laugh until I cried...and he still does. -- Traci French, Bliss

Friends or Acquaintances? Ask Your Cell Phone -- Bohannon 2009 (817): 1 -- ScienceNOW

by karlcow

Your telephone may know more about your private life than you do, according to a new study of mobile phone calls. The insight opens the door to mining massive data sets from mobile phone call logs, which should allow researchers to test theories for how relationship networks make or break businesses, shape the flow of information, and even affect the course of epidemics.

The Kickstarter Blog - Kickstarter and the 1,000 True Fans

by greut

From the beginning, we’ve encouraged creators to tap into their networks as much as possible: there’s clearly a desire from audiences for greater interaction, more access, a more intimate relationship. Twitter has demonstrated that. And so what Kickstarter does is answer the next part of that question: once you have your 10 or 100 or 1,000 or even 1,000,000 True Fans, what comes next?

You allow them a seat at the table. You invite them to become your patrons. You give them an opportunity to have an impact and it’s not just your story anymore, it’s theirs too. And that’s the kind of success that lasts.

Yahoo WOEID, Flickr shapefiles - GeoNames | Google Groups

Yahoo! has released their WOEID names/relationship database as CC-

The GeoPlanet Data does not contain any coordinate information, though

Flickr has also released a set of shapefiles as CC0, derived from WOEID

lat/lon geotagged photos:

This seems of interest to GeoNames. It could be cool to have a mapping

of GNIS identifiers to WOEIDs. Would that be within the mission of

GeoNames?

UrbanTick: What shape are you?

by karlcow

Wile working with the GPS track data of the UrbanDiary project, in connection with the series of interviews I am conducting, I suddenly recognized the different shapes and patterns that are being produced by the participants. Really funny shapes and forms, but always with a number of strong fix points. The shape is determined by a number of factors such as the spatial relationship of destinations, the distances traveled, the amount of travel and the intensity of repetition. The first point, relationship of destinations makes for the overall shape and the last point, the intensity of repetition makes for the character of the shape.

The images are all generated from participants that have a track record of two month and are the same scale.

What Do Women Want? - Discovering What Ignites Female Desire - NYTimes.com

by karlcow

And within a committed relationship, the crucial stimulus of being desired decreases considerably, not only because the woman’s partner loses a degree of interest but also, more important, because the woman feels that her partner is trapped, that a choice — the choosing of her — is no longer being carried out.

Toujours laisser l'incertitude et les portes ouvertes… la morale et le désir se contredisent.

Three Reasons Why I Won't Be Using Google Latitude - PC World

by karlcow

Now, Google Latitude does let you limit how specific of a location any given person can see. Let’s face it, though: If you make the effort to get into a location-sharing relationship with someone, odds are you’re both going to reveal more than just your current city. And if you suddenly disappear from the map or switch over to showing limited info, it’s going to look a little strange.

Hidding is revealing.

Communion With The Infinite - The Visual Music of the Shipibo tribe of the Amazon | Ayahuasca.com

by Neewok

Underlying the intricate geometric patterns of great complexity displayed in the art of the Shipibo people is a concept of an all pervading magical reality which can challenge the Western linguistic heritage and rational mind.

(...)

One of the challenges for the Western mind is to acknowledge the relationship between the Shipibo designs and music. For the Shipibo can “listen” to a song or chant by looking at the designs, and inversely paint a pattern by listening to a song or music. As an astonishing demonstration of this I witnessed two Shipiba paint a large ceremonial ceramic pot known as a Mahuetá. The pot was nearly five feet high and had a diameter of about three feet, each of the Shipiba couldn’t see what the other was painting, yet both were whistling the same song, and when they had finished both sides of the complex geometric pattern were identical and matched each side perfectly.
