Windows/Mac/Linux (Firefox): Fireclip, a free plug-in that monitors specific sections of web pages, puts the at-a-glance convenience of the OS X widget screen in a Firefox tab. You’ve discovered MoodBlast, yet more software to help you stay on top of your web life by simultaneously updating multiple chat clients and web services. MoodBlast is a standalone menubar app with a user-configurable system-wide hotkey that pops up an input window for your “blast”. The list of clients will probably continue to grow as APIs improve. I’m trying to avoid as much roundabout hacking as possible, making as much use as I can of available APIs. Therefore, MSN Messenger is currently off of my list, as is Pownce. We’ll see if either come around.

Relational databases are universally conceived of as an advance over their predecessors network and hierarchical models. Superior in every querying respect, they turned out to be surprisingly incomplete when modeling transitive dependencies. Almost every couple of months a question about how to model a tree in the database pops up at the comp.database.theory newsgroup. In this article I'll investigate two out of four well known approaches to accomplishing this and show a connection between them. We'll discover a new method that could be considered as a "mix-in" between materialized path and nested sets.
