100 Years of Design Manifestos -- Social Design Notes

by Spone & 1 other
Since the days of radical printer-pamphleteers, design and designers have a long history of fighting for what’s right and working to transform society. The rise of the literary form of the manifesto also parallels the rise of modernity and the spread of letterpress printing. This list of design manifestos was buried in a previous post but deserves its own permalink. It is largely drawn from Mario Piazza’s presentation at the Più Design Può conference in Florence, though I’ve edited and added to it. I’ve also incorporated links where I was able to find them.

WebHome < Main < Reprap

by Neewok

Look at your computer setup and imagine that you hooked up a 3D printer. Instead of printing on bits of paper this 3D printer makes real, robust, mechanical parts. To give you an idea of how robust, think Lego bricks and you're in the right area. You could make lots of useful stuff, but interestingly you could also make most of the parts to make another 3D printer. That would be a machine that could copy itself.

RepRap is short for Replicating Rapid-prototyper. It is the practical self-copying 3D printer shown on the right - a self-replicating machine.

microprinter / FrontPage

by karlcow

Tom describes it as "an experiment in physical activity streams and notification, using a repurposed receipt printer connected to the web". Hackers across the country are buying up old old receipt printers and imaginatively repurposing them into something new. We call them microprinters.

je veux cela mais en couleur (inkjet?) pour pouvoir coller dans mon carnet papier. Hmmm je me demande si Moleskine serait intéressé par le financement d'un tel projet ?

Split screen (filmmaking) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

by sbrothier (via)
In film and video production, split screen is the visible division of the screen, traditionally in half, but also in several simultaneous images, rupturing the illusion that the screen's frame is a seamless view of reality, similar to that of the human eye. Until the arrival of digital technology in the early 1990s, this was accomplished by using an optical printer to combine two or more actions filmed separately by copying them onto the same negative, called the composite.

Man gets Windows Vista to work with printer

by night.kame

After the article ran, I received e-mails from a couple of people inside Microsoft who were curious about the cause of the problem. With Mr. Walling's permission, I directed them to him. Tom White, test manager for documents and printing in Microsoft's Windows Experience group, visited the Walling household on multiple occasions, figured out what was wrong, and ultimately got the printer to work.

Gutenprint Features

by camel
Gutenprint is a package of high quality printer drivers for Linux, BSD, Solaris, IRIX, and other UNIX-alike operating systems. In many cases, these drivers rival or exceed the OEM drivers in quality and functionality. Our goal is to produce the highest possible output quality from all supported printers. To that end, we have done extensive work on screening algorithms, color generation, and printer feature utilization. We are continuing our work in all of these areas to produce ever higher quality results, particularly on the ubiquitous, inexpensive inkjet printers that are nonetheless capable of nearly photographic output quality. Printing support for The GIMP is only one small part of what Gutenprint does, and indeed, the Print plugin may eventually be removed from the core Gutenprint distribution. Gutenprint printer drivers can be used with all common UNIX print spooling systems, by means of either CUPS or Ghostscript. Here is a list of selected features: * Support for almost 300 printers made by Canon, Epson, Hewlett-Packard, Lexmark, and true compatibles. * The Print plug-in for the GIMP. * A native CUPS driver, providing simple configuration and operation with CUPS. * A native Ghostscript driver that can be compiled into Ghostscript. * A new, IJS-based Ghostscript driver that greatly simplifies installation for Ghostscript versions 6.53 and newer. * Complete Foomatic support for simplified configuration with all common printing systems. * Extensive output adjustments offer a tremendous range of adjustment to match color, brightness, and contrast. * Support for a wide range of printer output resolutions, permitting you to trade off printing speed against output quality. * 16-bit precision, producing virtually stepless output. * Bundled utilities to perform basic maintenance for Epson and Lexmark printers. * Extensive documentation for both users and developers.

Printer Friendly

by karlcow

Back in 1998, on this page, I predicted that this little machine would become “the most revolutionary concept in publishing since the invention of the mass-market paperback in 1936”. The e-book, I prophesied, would change the way we read for ever. Having written those words, I put my e-book away, and never turned it on again. The death of the traditional book has been predicted, wrongly, from the very start of the digital revolution. This
