These are environments that were, until recently, uninhabited by human beings and that contemporary science and technology turn into "inhabitable" places (Antarctica, underwater world, outer space, deserts); but also those that are becoming "uninhabitable" due to the impacts of our way of life (pollution, technological accidents, economical pressures and global warming).
(Un)Inhabitable? – Art of Extreme Environments presents works that explore the meaning of living in extreme environments, in the imaginary realm as well as in the physical one, in the political, social and environmental fields as well as in the poetic ones.

ENIGMA IMAGES: Even Though I'm Free I Am Not
A major global documentary project for Burma's political prisoners in association with Assistance Association for Political Prisoner's Burma (www.aappb.org)
Though imprisoned they are everywhere among us. Two thousand, one hundred and fifty nine political prisoners are currently incarcerated in the most horrendous of prison conditions in Burma’s notorious jails. Since the 1988 popular democracy movement inside Burma was crushed in a ruthless crackdown by the military regime, thousands of people have been arrested, tortured and given long prison sentences for their beliefs and political activities. Moreover, even after political prisoners are released, they continue to face persecution. The military uses all available means to intimidate, harass and isolate former political prisoners in order to prevent them from conducting political activities.

On the Identity Trail - Lessons From the Identity Trail
During the past decade, rapid developments in information and communications technology have transformed key social, commercial, and political realities. Within that same time period, working at something less than Internet speed, much of the academic and policy debate arising from these new and emerging technologies has been fragmented. There have been few examples of interdisciplinary dialogue about the importance and impact of anonymity and privacy in a networked society. Lessons from the Identity Trail: Anonymity, Privacy and Identity in a Networked Society fills that gap, and examines key questions about anonymity, privacy, and identity in an environment that increasingly automates the collection of personal information and relies upon surveillance to promote private and public sector goals.

Donc si je comprends bien un endroit sécurisé n'est pas un endroit protégé. :)Whether for private financial gain (e.g., by narcotics and arms traffickers) or for harmful political aims (e.g., by insurgents, terrorists, and other violent extremists), these illicit operations are most successful -- and most dangerous -- when their perpetrators have a place or situation that can provide refuge from efforts to combat or counter them. Such places and situations are often called safe havens, and potential safe havens are sometimes called ungoverned areas.
Gemma San Cornelio - Node "Locative Media and Artistic Practice: Explorations on the Ground"
The term locative media refers generally to the communication technologies involving location; ie, those providing a link or information relating to a specific place via devices such as GPS, mobile telephones or PDAs, laptop computers or wireless networks. These media are now fully integrated into our daily lives and lead to a whole series of social, professional and cultural routines. Likewise, they have catalysed a certain level of curiosity and concern both in terms of artistic practice and academic study. In this issue of Artnodes, we want to contribute to the academic debate on locative media. We focus specifically on artistic projects that use these media for distinct aims, from political activism to games, or the different ways of appropriating these technologies. This allows us to see, from a conceptual perspective, that all these projects share an idea of the notion of space: how it is ordered, how it is represented, or what kind of social interaction takes place there. These are the underlying questions in each and every one of these locative media projects.
Global Warming Is Irreversible, Study Says : NPR
"That's really a political decision because there's more at issue than just the science. It's the issue of what the science says, plus what's feasible politically, plus what's reasonable economically to do," Oppenheimer says.
