PUBLIC MARKS with search planet

Indonesia born photographer and illustrator Agan Harahap uses his Photoshop skills to insert pictures of some of our beloved superheroes like Spiderman, Superman and Batman into memorable political and wartime photos from the mid-20th century in his new project called “Superhero Photography”.

My brother pointed out this series of maps over at New Scientist. Combining a Buckminster Fuller-like interest in the most efficient way to map a sphere in two dimensions with a deployment of new algorithms, the maps show alternative ways of representing the earth's surface.

This is an enormous amount of geographic data. To put it in perspective, last week's planet was bzip2 compressed at 7.4GB, unzipping to 116GB, and occupying 113GB in a PostGIS database. The process of importing the data is very serious: even with a large Amazon instance which lets me allocate five gigabytes of RAM for the importer, the initial load takes over 29 hours.

On en sait désormais un peu plus sur Chrome OS, le système d'exploitation made in Google. Celui-ci est basé sur la distribution Debian dans une version ultra-allégée. Tous les composants intégrés sont Open Source et gratuits.

Après quelques recherches dans les réseaux underground et avec l'aide de Jérôme (on a risqué nos vies pour vous), nous avons réussi à mettre la main sur cette fameuse liste. Enfin sur plusieurs morceaux de liste qui, une fois réunis, ont formé une base de données très intéressante à étudier.

Vous ne trouverez pas cette liste ici pour des raisons légales, cela va de soi. En revanche voici une petite analyse rapide sur les informations récoltées.
