pv - Pipe Viewer - is a terminal-based tool for monitoring the progress of data through a pipeline. It can be inserted into any normal pipeline between two processes to give a visual indication of how quickly data is passing through, how long it has taken, how near to completion it is, and an estimate of how long it will be until completion.

Le Bibliobsédé a proposé une ouverture à la collaboration pour les ingrédients de son Bouillon. Le Bouillon est cuisiné pour contribuer à l’information et la formation de tous ceux qui s’intéressent aux métiers de l’information-documentation, souhaitent en suivre les évolutions et mieux comprendre les mutations engendrées par le numérique. Il me revient naturellement la joie de vous expliquer, aussi pédagogiquement que possible, le casse-tête qu’à signifié cette collaboration sous l’angle “Tutoriel Yahoo Pipes”. Parce que, grâce à Silvère (que mille tweets chantent sa gloire !), j’ai dû me tordre les méninges et les boyaux et les tuyaux (de Yahoo) pour structurer un résultat correct, manipulable et intéressant. Donc, présentation du pipe (et merci de le prononcer “païpe”, même intérieurement) en plusieurs étapes. Comme le résultat est relativement complexe, cela fera l’objet de plusieurs billets (au moins 3)

We use the canvas tag to create the fluid, draggable wiring to connect modules. The thumbnails of Pipes on the Browse and My Pipes sections aren't jpegs - we use canvas to "draw" them dynamically from the Pipe definition

Sphinx is a standalone search engine, meant to provide fast, size-efficient and relevant fulltext search functions to other applications. Sphinx was specially designed to integrate well with SQL databases and scripting languages. Currently built-in data sources support fetching data either via direct connection to MySQL or PostgreSQL, or using XML pipe mechanism (a pipe to indexer in special XML-based format which Sphinx recognizes).

I'm pleased to present you with part one of a two part series on creating a photo site using PHP, jQuery, and AJAX. Originally, I intended to fit the entire tutorial into one screencast, but that quickly became a pipe dream as I realized that there was simply too much to cover. Nevertheless, even if you only watch this first video, you should learn a great deal.
We'll be retrieving images from a database, creating a simple login form with authentication, and will then allow for our database to be asynchronously updated. Sounds good? If so, let's get into it.

Typical Scenario: You have a web server that serves your domain. You write a simple script to restart apache each night and pipe the logs off to your analyzer. It works.
ISP/Hosting Scenario: Each server hosts many domains. You may also have load balanced servers (multiple machines) serving each domain. A tool like this is necessary to:
1. collect all the log files from each server
2. split the logs based on the virtual host(s)
3. discard invalid entries (phishing, referrer spam, etc)
4. sort them into chronological order
5. feed logs into analyzer
6. do something with the raw logs (compress, save to vhost dir, etc)

Interazioni: Chkuser 2.0 - running qmail-smtpd

qmail-smtpd executes as a qmail dedicated user, communicating on the external SMTP side using a socket connection, and talking to the internal processing section using a pipe.
This architecture is very secure, as qmail-smtpd is allowed to read/write only what it owns (practically nothing), and, the eventual break of qmail-smtpd by a cracker would have a minimal impact on the safety of the system.

Backup Ubuntu using rdiff-backup -- Ubuntu Geek

rdiff-backup backs up one directory to another, possibly over a network. The target directory ends up a copy of the source directory, but extra reverse diffs are stored in a special subdirectory of that target directory, so you can still recover files lost some time ago. The idea is to combine the best features of a mirror and an incremental backup. rdiff-backup also preserves subdirectories, hard links, dev files, permissions, uid/gid ownership, modification times, extended attributes, acls, and resource forks. Also, rdiff-backup can operate in a bandwidth efficient manner over a pipe, like rsync. Thus you can use rdiff-backup and ssh to securely back a hard drive up to a remote location, and only the differences will be transmitted. Finally, rdiff-backup is easy to use and settings have sensical defaults.
