As computers have become faster, designers have added increasingly realistic details such as color, 3D effects, shadows, translucency, and even simple physics. Some of these changes have helped usability. Shadows behind windows help us see which window is active. The physicality of the iPhone’s user interface makes the device more natural to use.

Numpty Physics is a drawing puzzle game in the spirit (and style?) of Crayon Physics using the same excellent Box2D engine. Note though that I've not actually played CP so the experience may be very different. Numpty Physics includes a built-in editor so that you may build (and submit) your own levels.

3D Dewey Visualization : Reza with Processing

For my final project for MAT 259 (Data Visualization) I wanted to explore the topics of 3D Space, particle systems, OpenGL and java, alpha blending, bill boarding, user interactivity, self-organizing algorithms (Kohonen), and electromagnetic attractions and repulsion. The end result is what you see above and below. I used one year of transaction data (books, DVDs, etc) from the Seattle Public Library to drive the visualization. Each particle/sphere is given properties, such as what category/subcategory it represents and how many items where checked out in that category. This is used to drive the physics system that is used to separate the nodes evenly on the surface of the sphere, moreover I wrote a Kohonen-like to cluster the nodes that are related (same category) together. The visualization is interactive; it allows the user to manipulate how they see the data and the properties of the system.

It mainly deals with the movement of heat energy (hence the name), but that study has led the field to include more that heat. This is result of the fact that at the molecular level heat is just the energy of molecular motion. As a result Thermodynamics includes the affects of molecular motion.
