They Shoot Porn Stars Don't They . Words & photos by Susannah Breslin . Page 4

by karlcow

The day of reckoning has arrived in the Valley. Online content pirating, increased competition, a flooded market, the economic crisis, and a series of federal obscenity indictments have completely transformed the business of making adult movies. Consumers are no longer interested in paying for what they can get online for free. Across the board, those I spoke to reported profits have fallen by an estimated 30 to 50 percent.

WordPress › Free WordPress Themes

by mozkart (via)
While our directory is full of fantastic themes, sometimes people want to use something that they know has support behind it, and don't mind paying for that. Contrary to popular belief, GPL doesn't say that everything must be zero-cost, just that when you receive the software or theme that it not restrict your freedoms in how you use it. With that in mind, here are a collection of folks who provide GPL themes with extra paid services available around them. Some of them you may pay for access, some of them are membership sites, some may give you the theme for zero-cost and just charge for support. What they all have in common is people behind them who support open source, WordPress, and its GPL license.

Maverick Conceptions » Blog Archive » Using Development Methods in Design

by karlcow

If you are creating something for someone else, hopefully a paying client, there is a certain set of rules and protocols that you communicate with in terms of feedback, revisions, deadlines and deliverable. Some designers have created a custom process that they try and communicate with their client regarding expectations and some designers just shoot from the hip and hope things go smoothly.

ideasonideas - Eric Karjaluoto discusses design, brands and experience » Blog Archive » The future of the web is small

by znarf

We simply want to make enough money from our projects to cover our operating costs and take some time off. With each one, we generate a little extra passive revenue, and with time we won’t have to work as hard as we do now. Again, it’s not unimaginable wealth we desire, but the freedom to do as we wish.

...

We need to start paying for what we consume, but at reasonable prices.

...

To build this nice fabric of microprenuers, we need an era of micro-benefactors: those who pay a small sum to support the people who make the stuff we love.

Visitors can buy a T-shirt of their own choice, the only condition being that they share a bit of personal information about themselves, or more precisely: their name and address. When paying for the T-shirt at the museum-shop, the information is automatically mapped in Google Maps, thereby making it possible to see where each T-shirt ends up after leaving the museum.

OCLC and the Great Library Scandal | booktwo.org

by karlcow

Why are our publicly funded libraries locked into a monopolistic relationship with a clearly greedy data supplier? Why are they paying thousands of pounds to access their own data? Why are the public, whose money is paying for this, locked out of the system?

Plutôt que de se battre sur le code source libre, les données *publiques* livres placées dans des silos, c'est plus dommageable.

BOX: Les Petites Morts »

Many, many years ago, the 5 of us lamented the death of the smut rag. We had grown up under the legandary mantle of Playboy and its innocence, Penthouse and its penetrative expostions, and (for the lucky ones among us with cool older brothers or pervy dads), the no-holes barred Jugs and Hustler. But then the Internet came along, and suddenly all the Vaseline™ on the lens couldn’t justify paying for porn when there was so much of it for free. And yet, we remained unsatisfied. Sure, there was sometimes amazing porn to be found online, but it lacked the polish, the sheen. Plus, all joking aside, we missed the prose aspect of the smut magazine. As they say, the brain IS the largest sex organ (except on Chris, because DAMN. We’ve seen him in the shower.)

Finch Formats Web Sites for Really Slow Connections

by decembre
The universal, high-speed-everywhere web isn't quite a reality yet, as anyone who's used a relative's dial-up or a seriously weak airport connection can testify to. Web page re-formatting tool Finch gives you just the text, ma'am, from any site you plug into its address box, stripping Flash, JavaScript, stylesheets, and even images from the layout. Tools like this often crop up for mobile phones, such as Google's Mobilizer, but Finch is made for the desktop browser. Some sites will work better with their graphical navigators removed than others, of course, but for anyone stuck with a fist-poundingly slow connection, or paying for every megabyte, Finch is a great bookmarket to keep handy.

Message from David Plouffe: Midnight Deadline

by starmuscle
FROM BARACK OBAMA'S WEBSITE AND NEWSLETTER: Campaign Manager David Plouffe just sent this email out... Amanda -- This week, we saw the stark differences between Barack Obama and John McCain on the economy. With Wall Street in crisis and families struggling, Barack offered a solid plan to strengthen the middle class, including tax cuts for nearly all Americans. John McCain continued the same old politics -- lying about Barack's plan and offering more of the same George Bush policies, including more tax breaks for Big Oil and no solutions for working families. It's time for that kind of politics to change. And thanks to supporters like you, our movement has grown by more than 50,000 new donors this week. Now we're within reach of a new goal -- 100,000 new donors by midnight tonight. With just 45 days left before the election, your support will affect crucial decisions about infrastructure in key battleground states. A donation now could have a big impact on voter registration and Get Out The Vote operations -- so please don't wait if you're planning to give. And today, your donation will go twice as far. You can match the gift of a first-time donor and inspire them to own a piece of this campaign. Can you make a donation before midnight tonight and double your impact? Many voters are paying attention for the first time, and 1 in 10 is still undecided. Now is a crucial time to expand our outreach through voter registration and getting as many people as possible out to vote for real change on November 4th. Your donation today is crucial to these efforts across the country -- especially in the key battleground states where the cost to compete is extremely high, and the stakes are even higher. Make a donation of $25 or more right now to help us reach our goal, and provide the resources we need to win: https://donate.barackobama.com/promise Thanks for everything you are doing, David David Plouffe Campaign Manager Obama for America
