I made a web-based interface for curating the results of entity extraction from scientific papers.
It converts XML files to text, passes the text through machine annotators, lets curators add/delete/modify the annotations, then splices the annotations back into the original XML file.

nendo created blown-fabric for Tokyo Fiber ’09 Senseware, an exhibition intended to convey the possibilities of new materials developed with Japanese synthetic fibre technology.
'Smash' is a specialized long-fibre non-woven polyester that can be manipulated into different forms through hot press forming technology. Because it is thermoplastic, light and rip-proof, but glows beautifully when light passes through it, we wanted to create lighting fixtures in the style of vernacular Japanese chochin paper lanterns with it.

This tutorial introduces a Processing interface sketch provides a GUI for the command-line interface written into the Arduino RFID example. You should read that tutorial first. The sketch shown here also allows you to upload tags it reads to O’Reilly’s Emerging Technology Conference attendee portal, and retrieves the resulting profile. The API for this was written by Edd Dumbill. The Processing sketch retrieves RFID tags from the Arduino reader serially, then passes the tag via a HTTP request to a PHP script on a remote server, shown below, that adds an authorized login to the O’Reilly site.

GreenSQL (or greensql-fw) is a firewall for MySQL databases that filters SQL injection attacks. It works as a reverse proxy, i.e., it takes the SQL queries, checks them, passes them on to the MySQL database and delivers back the result from the MySQL database. It comes with a web interface (called greensql-console) so that you can manage GreenSQL through a web browser. This guide shows how you can install GreenSQL and its web interface on a Debian Etch server.

On trouve décidément des perles, sur le site de TED. Cette conférence annuelle propose à un public chic et friqué, chaque année en février à Monterey (Californie), une brochette d’orateurs brillants et variés : créateurs, chercheurs, chanteurs, entrepreneurs, visionnaires… Ce club passablement élitiste (sur invitation, 4400 $ pour 4 jours) pense aussi aux pauvres, puisque les vidéos de ses conférences sont accessibles sur son site Web. Nous avons déjà présenté ici la démonstration décoiffante de Jeff Han (chercheur en informatique, NYU) et l’exposé trépident de Hans Rosling (expert en santé publique internationale, Karolinska Institute).
Dans un autre genre, la conférence de Michael Shermer est tout aussi remarquable. L’homme est le fondateur de la Skeptics Society et le directeur du magazine Skeptic. Et tout ce petit monde guerroie aux États-Unis contre la pseudoscience et autres croyances. Il y a du travail.
Le meilleur morceau du plaidoyer rationaliste de Michael Shermer est une démonstration redoutable de la fragilité du témoignage humain s’appuyant sur un test issu des travaux d’une équipe de chercheurs en cognition visuelle. Si vous promettez de ne pas cliquer tout de suite sur les liens, je veux bien vous dire qu’il s’agit des travaux sur la cécité inattentionnelle de l’équipe de Daniel Simons du Visual Cognition Lab de l’Université de L’Illinois.
Tout le monde devrait passer ce test qui dévoile un aspect inattendu de l’esprit humain. On y va ? Pour les anglophones, il suffit de regarder cette vidéo. Le test est à la 9e minute (on zappe plus facilement ici).
Pour les non-anglophones, je résume les explications fournies par Michael Shermer avant de lancer une vidéo que le public est invité à scruter. On y voit deux équipes de trois personnes, portant respectivement des T-shirts blancs et noirs. Chaque équipe a un ballon de basket et se fait des passes. Il faut suivre attentivement la balle de l’équipe en blanc et compter les passes. Sans dévoiler le pot aux roses, l’orateur laisse entendre qu’il y aurait un différentiel homme-femme dans les performances à ce test. Donc : ne pas perdre de vue la balle qui circule entre les blancs et compter les passes. La vidéo est ici.
Comme je ne peux pas écrire la solution à l’envers en bas du billet, je vous donne rendez-vous dans les commentaires. Allez, soyez honnêtes, que ceux qui n’y ont vu que du feu le disent. Les autres aussi, d’ailleurs.

Travel to Ogij Nuur took us only a day but it was quite tiresome. The so-called road ended after one hundred kilometers and after that we were following tracks of our predecessors, through the steppe, in clouds of yellow-gray dust. The average speed reached by off-road vehicles in Mongolia is 30 km/h. Besides, judging distances, there is no point in watching a map. The road is always a way longer, going zigzag through valleys and passes not suitable for a car at all.

The Pound program is a reverse proxy, load balancer and HTTPS front-end for Web server(s). Pound was developed to enable distributing the load among several Web-servers and to allow for a convenient SSL wrapper for those Web servers that do not offer it natively. Pound is distributed under the GPL - no warranty, it's free to use, copy and give away.
WHAT POUND IS:
1. a reverse-proxy: it passes requests from client browsers to one or more back-end servers.
2. a load balancer: it will distribute the requests from the client browsers among several back-end servers, while keeping session information.
3. an SSL wrapper: Pound will decrypt HTTPS requests from client browsers and pass them as plain HTTP to the back-end servers.
4. an HTTP/HTTPS sanitizer: Pound will verify requests for correctness and accept only well-formed ones.
5. a fail over-server: should a back-end server fail, Pound will take note of the fact and stop passing requests to it until it recovers.
6. a request redirector: requests may be distributed among servers according to the requested URL.
Pound is a very small program, easily audited for security problems. It can run as setuid/setgid and/or in a chroot jail. Pound does not access the hard-disk at all (except for reading the certificate file on start, if required) and should thus pose no security threat to any machine.

PulseAudio is a sound server for POSIX and Win32 systems. A sound server is basically a proxy for your sound applications. It allows you to do advanced operations on your sound data as it passes between your application and your hardware. Things like transferring the audio to a different machine, changing the sample format or channel count and mixing several sounds into one are easily achieved using a sound server.
PulseAudio has been tested on Linux, Solaris, FreeBSD, Windows 2000 and Windows XP. It should also run on all other POSIX and Windows systems, but may require new backends to handle their sound systems.

There are several good introductions to category theory, each written for a different audience. However, I have never seen one aimed at someone trained as a programmer rather than as a computer scientist or as a mathematician. There are programming languages that have been designed with category theory in mind, such as Haskell, OCaml, and others; however, they are not typically taught in undergraduate programming courses. Java, on the other hand, is often used as an introductory language; while it was not designed with category theory in mind, there is a lot of category theory that passes over directly.
