Implementers' Draft: Portable Contacts 1.0 Draft C

by karlcow

This API defines a language- and platform- neutral protocol for Consumers to request address book, profile, and friends-list information from Service Providers. As a protocol, it is intended to be easy to understand and implement, either as a Service Provider or Consumer, using any language or platform of choice. It is also intended to be implemented by both individuals and small services as well as large providers, in any case where a service contains data about who a user knows and wishes to make that information portable, under the user's control.

Art Fag City » IMG MGMT: The Nine Eyes of Google Street View

by karlcow

his essay illustrates how my Street View collections reflect the excitement of exploring this new, virtual world. The world captured by Google appears to be more truthful and more transparent because of the weight accorded to external reality, the perception of a neutral, unbiased recording, and even the vastness of the project. At the same time, I acknowledge that this way of photographing creates a cultural text like any other, a structured and structuring space whose codes and meaning the artist and the curator of the images can assist in constructing or deciphering.

What is a Magazine? - Tony Silber - Blogs Consumer @ FolioMag.com

by mozkart (via)
At the Independent Magazine Advisory Group’s sixth annual meeting in Boulder, Colorado this week, Bob Sacks, president of Precision Media Group, offered six key properties for what a magazine is. Tellingly, his were platform-neutral: 1.    It’s metered. It’s paginated. It has a beginning, middle and end. 2.    It’s edited, or curated. 3.    It’s designed. 4.    It’s date-stamped. 5.    It’s permanent. Once created, it can’t be changed. 6.    It’s periodic. It has a calendar or rhythm. It has a series of issues.

The iCalendar validation project « Jon Udell

by karlcow

I’m delighted to report that two developers of libraries that support iCalendar are collaborating to do just that. Ben Fortuna is the author of iCal4j, which powers the best currently-available online iCalendar validator. And Doug Day is the author of DDay.iCal, a C# iCalendar library. Both iCal4j and DDay.iCal are open source projects.

They’re collaborating, at icalvalid.wikidot.com, on a platform-neutral suite of tests that can serve as foundation for a more robust iCalendar validation service.

ID Selector

by camel & 1 other
ID Selector: Quick Guide It's all about getting users signed into your website as quickly and efficiently as possible. It achieves this by providing a simple, consistent, provider neutral interface, and by educating the user about OpenID during the sign in process. In short, it makes OpenID easier for the end user and benefits both the relying parties and OpenID providers. What is the Selector? It's a widget that you add to the existing OpenID login form on your website. You embed a snippet of javascript code into your page, and it writes in an HTML button tag styled to match your CSS.

Destroy Today / DestroyFlickr

by decembre & 2 others
DestroyFlickr explores alternative methods for viewing and sharing Flickr content. Its user interface provides an environment that benefits photos rather than hindering them. With the ability to look at a photo on a dark, neutral background, you can view it without the interference of a brighter surrounding. By using workspaces and canvases, DestroyFlickr is able to retain a constant history of where you have navigated, offering the ability to revisit an area without the need to reload the entire page. DestroyFlickr takes advantage of features provided by the Adobe AIR SDK that are unavailable to web-based RIAs. With the support of both drag and drop uploading and downloading, posting and saving photos is done in one easy motion. Now you can download the highest resolution version of a photo without having to see it first—just drag a thumbnail to the download menu and the download begins.

Polaroid Manipulation

by sbrothier
If you happen to have an old SX-70 camera lying around, you're in luck. SX-70 cameras can take Polaroid 600 film with an easy modification. Folding SX-70 cameras are superior to 600 cameras as they have optional neutral density filters, glass lenses and a starting focal length of 10.4 inches. The modification to use 600 film with SX-70 cameras is not a modification to the camera, but to the film cartridge and is simple to do.

A design pattern for image and figure alignment at FactoryCity

by sbrothier & 4 others
Dan Cederholm proposed the idea of a figure microformat some time ago and I followed up with a post the microformats discuss list. I’ve continued thinking about it and after throwing down with Tantek over IM, realized that K2’s presentational approach of using alignleft, alignright and center classnames on images just didn’t hold up over time and, as Tantek asserted, was worse than being semanticly neutral.
