Free Music Archive

by garret & 1 other
Not to be confused with the Live Music Archive (see the MP3 Hub section, above), the Free Music Archive is a new (in 2009) resource of free and legal MP3s that was launched by the venerable NYC-area public radio station, WFMU (which is, you should know, the longest-running free-form radio station in the US). The Free Music Archive describes itself as "a social music website built around a curated library of free, legal audio." Featuring downloadable songs placed online by WFMU, KEXP, and a handful of other interesting musical organizations, the Free Music Archive can be browsed by curator or genre, but you have to thumb through a lot--there are no easy indexes to get a broad look at the offerings. And while the site claims to have more than 5,000 MP3s available, what's here is decidedly idiosyncratic. Still, as a large repository of free and legal MP3s, it's worth a visit every now and then. The Shape of Song

by karlcow

What does music look like? The Shape of Song is an attempt to answer this seemingly paradoxical question. The custom software in this work draws musical patterns in the form of translucent arches, allowing viewers to see--literally--the shape of any composition available on the Web. The resulting images reflect the full range of musical forms, from the deep structure of Bach to the crystalline beauty of Philip Glass.

Massive music quiz

by macareux & 12 others

ixi audio

by Emaux
ixi audio is an experimental project concerned with the creation of digital musical instruments and environments for generative music. We are interested in the computer as a workshop for building non-conventional tools for musicians, i.e. not trying to imitate or copy the tools that we know from the world of acoustic instruments or studio technology. We currently work with open source software such as SuperCollider, ChucK and Pure Data, but our aim is to distribute our applications packaged in a way that allows everybody to use them. Simplicity and ease of use together with depth in interaction and expressive scope is the aim of our experimental music software.

jMusic - Computer music composition in Java.

by Emaux & 1 other
jMusic is a project designed to provide composers and software developers with a library of compositional and audio processing tools. It provides a solid framework for computer-assisted composition in Java™, and is also used for generative music, instrument building, interactive performance, and music analysis. jMusic supports musicians with its familiar music data structure based upon note/sound events, and provides methods for organising, manipulating and analysing that musical data. jMusic scores can be rendered as MIDI or audio files for storage and later processing or playback in real-time.

Start of Distributed MIDI Standard to Open Creative Possibilities for Musical Composition and Performance

by Emaux
Start of Distributed MIDI Standard to Open Creative Possibilities for Musical Composition and Performance DMIDI will use the current Ethernet-based networking infrastructure to carry MIDI data at transmission speeds as great as 10 Gbit/sec. This speed boost will allow for the full use of such sub-protocols as DLS and MIDI Show/Machine control.

GUIDO Format - Specification (Draft)

by Emaux
The GUIDO Notation Format is a general purpose formal language for representing score level music in a platform independent, plain-text and human-readable way. It is based on a conceptually simple but powerful formalism; its design concentrates on general musical concepts (as opposed to notational, i.e, graphical features). A key feature of the GUIDO design is adequacy, which means that simple musical concepts should be represented in a simple way and only complex notions should require complex representations.
