Abandon Ship! The City Is Sinking!

by macbros
Holy shit we’re getting a lot of rain here in Fredericton NB, Canada! So much that the police are closing down roads here in the city because of flooding. When I was at work today, I was actually surprised at how high the river was, and that was earlier in the afternoon. It’s still pissing like crazy out there right now and it’s later in the evening. I can expect that a lot of low lying areas will get some pretty bad flooding if this afternoons river height was any indication.

Speak Up › Dear Lulu, The New Standards

by karlcow

My plan for the workshop is to investigate the visible and tangible parameters of graphic design — type specimens, halftone screens and, in particular, colour tests and calibration charts — and make a book of our own self-produced tests which we will send to print on Friday afternoon using the online print-on-demand system Lulu. The book project will therefore act as a colour/type/pattern test of the very system with which it is produced. "Print-on-demand" is an increasingly important production system which can serve to make us designers rethink the impact our profession has on the environment and to question the often wasteful print volumes and production methods requested of us by our clients. Graphic designers, and especially students, have a chance to use and subvert these relatively new (and fairly cheap) technological systems to our advantage.

massive sinkhole near Daisetta

A massive sinkhole near Daisetta, Texas is seen Wednesday afternoon, May 7, 2008. A zigzagging hole believed to be as long as two football fields and up to 100 feet deep continued to widen late Wednesday, threatening to gobble up nearby tanks and other oilfield equipment.

Don Dodge on The Next Big Thing: The coming Web Service Tsunami

by mozkart
The coming Web Service Tsunami Any application can be rewritten as a web based service. Salesforce.com is an excellent example of taking an existing client server application and rewriting it as a web based service. Hotmail is a web based email service. IBM is pushing hard with its "On Demand" software as a service program. Consumer focused web based services are often cited as examples, and there are lots of them. But enterprise applications are where the big money is and entrepreneurs know this. In the web service model a developer can code a feature or bug fix in the morning, test it in the afternoon, and have it deployed to millions of users by the end of the day. Innovation is instant, and continuous. Contrast this to the traditional software development method that takes years to develop, test, and ship. Then large corporations will only update their application infrastructure once a year. So it can take years to get a feature to the ultimate end user. Today Google, MSN, Amazon, Yahoo, eBay, Salesforce.com, and hundreds of start-ups are delivering applications as web services. For the purposes of this discussion Web Service will mean any software functionality that does not require a client download.

Information Architects Japan » iA Notebook » Washington Post Redesign as a Wiki

by sbrothier
After our last posts on the future of news we have been asked again and again to illustrate: 1. What does a newspaper as a wiki look like? 2. How can newspapers bring their online and offline identity together? 3. What is appropriate advertisement? 4. What is an easy to read newspaper website? Of course we are still not allowed to show the work we did for our client. So instead we made a sketch this afternoon of how the Washington Post might look if we redesigned it:

Widows Vista troubles - 65 More Windows Vista Mistakes

Okay, I lied. 67 instead of 65. That’s enough feedback for Vista in one afternoon. I’m going back to picking apart Outlook 2007 now, and will push you back to my first Vista list if this wasn’t enough.

"Hello" in many languages

by 4gianna
In addition to the international greetings in many languages on these pages, I also have several other lists of translations in many languages: good morning, good afternoon, good evening and good night, how are you?, welcome, goodbye, please, thank you, what is your name?, my name is..., do you speak English?, yes, no, and I don't understand. If you want more information about a particular language, see my page of Internet Language Resources. My goal is to include every language of the world on these pages. There are still several thousand languages out there that I don't have yet, so all additions and corrections will be very welcome!
