About « Web Hooks

by parmentierf
Web hooks are user-defined callbacks over HTTP. They’re intended to, in a sense, “jailbreak” our web applications to become more extensible, customizable, and ultimately more useful. Conceptually, web applications only have a request-based “input” mechanism: web APIs. They lack an event-based output mechanism, and this is the role of web hooks. People talk about Unix pipes for the web, but they forget: pipes are based on standard input and standard output. Feeds are not a sufficient form of output for this, which is partly why Yahoo Pipes was not the game changer some people expected. Instead, we need adoption of a simple, real-time, event-driven mechanism, and web hooks seem to be the answer. Web hooks are bringing a new level of event-based programming to the web.

Sphinx - Free open-source SQL full-text search engine

by delavigne & 3 others
Sphinx is a standalone search engine, meant to provide fast, size-efficient and relevant fulltext search functions to other applications. Sphinx was specially designed to integrate well with SQL databases and scripting languages. Currently built-in data sources support fetching data either via direct connection to MySQL or PostgreSQL, or using XML pipe mechanism (a pipe to indexer in special XML-based format which Sphinx recognizes).

Venture Chronicles

by e_D_D_y & 1 other
My name is Jeff Nolan and I write Venture Chronicles. What started, in 2002, as a simple initiative to understand this thing called “blogs” that I kept hearing about has evolved into something much more significant. Along the way to becoming a bona fide blogger I started to understand the implications of user generated content. At the time I was a venture capitalist for SAP, the enterprise software company, and in my travels in the enterprise software market it became evident that blogging would be a powerful communication channel for enterprises to use, and a powerful information collection mechanism for bottom up corporate intelligence. Combined with search technology, social networking software, and wikis, I was witnessing the inception of an entirely new generation of knowledge management software. I can be reached at jnolan-at-gmail-dot-com.

W3C WD: HTML Dialects: Internet Media Types and SGML Document Types

by karlcow

The HTML 2.0 specification, RFC1866, defines an SGML application and an Internet media type. The specification notes that extensions are planned, but only the text/html; level=2 internet media type and the "-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN" document type are defined. This document suggests the use of URIs as system identifiers for document type definitions, allowing decentralized evolution of the language. The use of marked sections as a transition technique and the continued use of the level mechanism for standardized points in the evolution path are discussed.

GetPingd | Google Groups

by greut (via)

Many web resources provide mechanisms for subscribing to changes in their content. However, this change information is only made available via a polling mechanism.

A number of people have proposed mechanisms for subscribing to updates to pages or feeds, however, a missing element of all these proposals is a subscription mechanism. Sadly, this means that every site supporting this feature will likely end up with a different implementation.

Web Workers

by parmentierf (via)
This specification defines an API that allows Web application authors to spawn background workers running scripts in parallel to their main page. This allows for thread-like operation with message-passing as the coordination mechanism.

HTTPmail ietf draft

by karlcow

This document proposes a standard format and a standard navigation mechanism so that mail stores can provide interoperable access to mailboxes and messages over HTTP. Mailbox contents and listings of mailboxes are exposed as Atom Feeds, while messages themselves are downloaded as a document of type message/822. Each mailbox and each message is assigned an HTTP URL, and if permissions checks are satisfied, each message may be downloaded independently.

XHTML Role Attribute Module

by greut (via)

The attribute describes the role(s) the current element plays in the context of the document. This can be used, for example, by applications and assistive technologies to determine the purpose of an element. This could allow a user to make informed decisions on which actions may be taken on an element and activate the selected action in a device independent way. It could also be used as a mechanism for annotating portions of a document in a domain specific way (e.g., a legal term taxonomy).

how you can improve the definition of what is what. Those roles are present into ARIA.

…My heart’s in Accra » Picnic08 - Genevieve Bell on secrets and lies.

by karlcow
Repeated in long discussions with Boris (yes that boris) many years ago in Montreal. Lies are a social feature. They are part of the glue of human relationships. The same way that trust is a shortcut mechanism for life. We trust because we don't want to check everything every time. We lie because we want to smooth our life. It is about polishing to avoid to have sharp wood in our fingers.

Thoughts About Photography: Updated 35mm Lego Camera Design

by sbrothier
Inspired by George Bristol’s variation on the film advance mechanism of my Lego camera, I have reworked the design of my 35mm Lego camera. The new camera has several things going for it. Overall it is slightly smaller. It now has an internal shutter mechanism which replaces the clumsy swinging door of the earlier model. Most importantly, I came up with a simple way to rewind the film so now the camera no longer needs to be unloaded in the dark. I have tested a couple of rolls of film with it and the improvements make this a very fun little toy! I am seriously starting to consider selling these, perhaps on Ebay. Would anybody be interested? What do you think it would be worth?

The point of “Open” in OpenID

by karlcow

All OpenID actually provides is a mechanism for asserting ownership over a URL and then “proving” that assertion. We can build a pyramid of interesting things on top of this, but that assertion is really all OpenID gives us (well, that and a globally unique identifier).

Cockroach Controlled Mobile Robot - Garnet Hertz

by oqdbpo
"Cockroach Controlled Mobile Robot" is an experimental mechanism that uses a living Madagascan hissing cockroach atop a modified trackball to control a three-wheeled robot. If the cockroach moves left, the robot moves left. Infrared sensors also provide navigation feedback to the cockroach, striving to create a pseudo-intelligent system with the cockroach as the CPU.
