photography - The Flaming Lips
The Flaming Lips are probably my favourite live band. I think they're the rock equivalent of a gospel band. They sing songs about the inevitability of death and yet you still come away from their shows with a big smile on your face. I've been a fan for years and their shows get more and more overblown. The first time I shot them was at The Royal Albert Hall in April this year when they were touring to celebrate the release of the 'At War With The Mystics' album. I was lucky enough to meet them aftwards and gave Wayne Coyne and Scott Booker (their manager and all round nice guy) a copy of Anyway Anyhow Anywhere, the Who book I wrote with Andy Neill. When I saw them again at Hyde Park in June 2006 Wayne invited me to shoot the whole show from the stage, which was very nice of him. The problem is there is so much going on when they perform that it's actually very difficult to shoot them from the stage! Great experience though.

The Flaming Lips (尤其是主唱Wayne Coyne)經常裝扮怪異，不管是現身演唱會或音樂雜誌報導 (近期以那不知是外星人還是太空人的模樣登上Paste封面為代表)皆顯得與團員年齡及資歷不太相稱，但他們早已公推是後判客年代最具原創性的樂隊，對於這種已有歷史定位的，總不免覺得他們接下難再有什麼驚天動地、驚世駭俗的突破。尤其The Flaming Lips從八○年代中期的美式獨立噪音搖滾一路脫胎換成近期的新迷幻風骨，其始終豐盈的創意與大團氣勢，已經夠讓眾多後生晚輩折服；而九九年那張前作《The Soft Bulletin》更是公認九○年代結束前，夠格與Pink Floyd之《Dark Side Of The Moon》相提並論的經典。
