Dion Hinchcliffe's Blog - Musings and Ruminations on Building Great Systems - Thursday, August 06, 2009 Entries

by karlcow

Recently InfoQ did a good summary of the debates around the apparent (to some) limitations of REST when it comes to creating good Web services. At issue is that REST APIs seem to expose "CRUDy" services that fly in the face of years of good services design, particularly when they are just read/write interfaces instead of the richer, full REST architecture (more on what this is later.) The discussion was spurred by Arnon Rotem-Gal-Oz's assertion recently that CRUD is bad for REST, which in my opinion is close but not quite right.

CAHAYA CMS

by Xavier Lacot & 1 other , 4 comments
CAHAYA CMS is an open source management system built on top of the Zend Framework, which makes building websites extremely easy. Even if interesting, the project is still very young and suffers some conception limitations - the lack for structured content is one of the greatest, in my opinion.

by karlcow

Michael Goodchild’s notion of Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) on the emergence of geographic data provided voluntarily by individuals, to discuss the greater presence of unvoluntarily generated geographic data. In the talk “Not So Volunteered Geographic Information“, I present my method to analysis these new kinds of citizen generated data, and use my work to discuss the induced opportunities, limitations and concerns.

Privacy Diffusion on the Web: A Longitudinal Perspective | Semantic Web Dog Food

by karlcow

or the last few years we have studied the diffusion of private information about users as they visit various Web sites triggering data gathering aggregation by third parties. This paper reports on our longitudinal study consisting of multiple snapshots of our examination of such diffusion over four years. We examine the various technical ways by which third-party aggregators acquire data and the depth of userrelated information acquired. We study techniques for protecting against this privacy diffusion as well as limitations of such techniques. We introduce the concept of secondary privacy damage. Our results show increasing aggregation of user-related data by a steadily decreasing number of entities. A handful of companies are able to track users' movement across almost all of the popular Web sites. Virtually all the protection techniques have significant limitations highlighting the seriousness of the problem and the need for alternate solutions.

jQuery.ifixpng - png transparency for windows ie versions below 6

by kobo & 8 others (via)
plugin designed to fix that problem by applying appropriate filters to user specified elements, while keeping all element tags intact. Plugin works well with both img elements within the DOM and css properties specified externally. • It is chainable. • Unlike some other png hack solutions, it does not replace/hide any of your html tags. • You can revert applied changes using .iunfixpng(). • Extremely easy to use! Known limitations (I don't have solutions for those listed below yet - CSS features that are lost when the fix applied) • Always defaults to "background-position:top left" and you cannot reposition it. • Unable to perform "background-repeat:repeat-y" or "background-repeat:repeat-x" on a target. • For the hack to work your item needs to be visible. Rapidshare Plus - RapidShare Download Accelerator - CryptLoad. - TéLéCharger Plusieurs Fichiers En MêMe Temps

by decembre & 1 other

by decembre

PAM Mod__Modification non-officielle de PortableApps.com Menu_ R34PTC, more than design!

by decembre

One of the school’s most significant contributions to Mozilla’s Firefox project was developed last year by a recent Seneca computer studies graduate Andrew Smith. Infiniband is an interconnect technology that breaks through the bandwidth and fanout limitations of PCI bus by switching from traditional shared bus architecture to a switched fabric architecture. This article explains how to use RDS (Reliable Datagram Sockets), a protocol (similar to UDP) designed to work over Infiniband to send and receive data using sockets.

[DRAFT] Experiences Shared by People with Disabilities and by People Using Mobile Devices

by karlcow

People with disabilities (using desktop or laptop computers) and people without disabilities who are using mobile devices have similar interaction limitations and experience similar barriers when interacting with Web sites. There is also significant overlap between the design solutions for both. For more information, see:
