CouchDB Implements a Fundamental Algorithm : Daytime Running Lights
We're seeing a lot of action in the key/value map/reduce world lately. On the one hand this is because simpler stuff scales more simply, and on the other because key/value and B-Tree stores map cleanly to some fundamental algorithms.
[FoRK] Programming languages, operating systems, despair and anger
And so for 20 years now these folks --- *the* shining lights, in many ways, of "practical" programming language, operating systems, and general systems research --- have continued to fail to "get" the fundamental practical needs of everyday programmers working in The Real World.

Milk Bottle LED Lights, Arduino Controlled
Make PPE milk bottles into good looking LED lights, and use an Arduino to control them. This recycles a number of things, mainly the milk bottles, and uses a very low amount of power: the LEDs apparently dissipate less than 3 watts but are bright enough to see by!

Google LatLong: Tip of the week: Postcards from Google Earth
Cela me rappelle les cartes postales reçues de membres de la famille, avec l'hotel où ils sont allés et un cercle autour de la fenêtre et l'inscription (notre chambre ici), une necéssité de géolocaliser l'humain dans le carré de la photographie.Let's say you are on vacation in Paris and you want your friends to be able to see and interact with all the beautiful sights of the City of Lights. A regular postcard is good, but you know you can do better. So open up Google Earth, search for 'Eiffel Tower', find your favorite view of the monument and voilà, you're ready to send a virtual postcard. You decide the best view of the Eiffel Tower is this one:

London Lights – welovelocal Blog
I made these videos using Processing, a Java-based language, to make these data visualization videos of welovelocal’s London reviews over time. They span from the start of welovelocal to January 29th, 2008. The colour of each dot represents the rating of each review with red being 1 star and green being 5 stars.
very nice visualizations of rating of the time, mostly green though.
