In-Field Labels jQuery Plugin

by Tiagut
This is a simple plugin that turns properly formatted HTML forms into forms with in-field label support. Labels fade when the field is focussed and disappear when text entry begins. Clearing a field and leaving brings back the label.

IE6/IE7 Implicit Label Bug

I assume this is such an esoteric bug that I don't need to create recommendations on fixing it. I just wanted to document it in case someone else comes across this bug

Re: xmlns in HTML5 (was: Telecon Agenda- Thursday 1500 UTC) from Steven Pemberton on 2009-07-17 (public-rdf-in-xhtml-tf@w3.org from July 2009)

by karlcow

Well, the author can say it is anything they want, but that doesn't change what it actually is. It is literally not possible to send XHTML5 as text/html, because as soon as you label it as text/html, you are stating "it is HTML".

I used to think that too, but then I realised that in the real world it is different. Browsers sniff, and media types are hard-wired into software, rather than being an extension point. You have to row with the oars you have got. As I said, I send documents with media type text/html, not because they are necessarily HTML, but because I want them in the browser. I agree that the document gets *processed* as HTML, but the document doesn't magically change type just because it gets sent with a certain media type.

Official Google Blog: The evolution of Gmail labels

by sbrothier & 1 other
I love labels in Gmail. Most email programs use folders, which only let me put mail in one place at a time. With labels, I can organize mail in multiple ways. Combined with filters to automatically label incoming messages, Gmail offers powerful ways to organize email.

Mapdiva Under Construction

by karlcow

Ortelius is different. It is a dedicated map-making illustration program exclusively for Mac OS X that knows geography. Instead of building maps from lines and primitive shapes, you draw directly with roads, railways, boundaries, buildings, woods and streams. Generate contour lines from elevation points. Label items using a consistent style.

Please connect that to OSM

People's Music Store: Build Your Own Record Shop

by garret (via)
"People's Music Store is a newly launched DIY online music store. It was created by the founder of MP3 reseller Bleep.com, Ged Day. People's Music Store styles itself as "the first music store entirely powered by music fans." Basically the service allows you to set up your own custom-designed record store, with music chosen from a catalogue of indie record labels (so far no major record label music). The idea is that you earn points, equivalent to 10% of the price of the single, EP or album that you sell. These points can only be used to buy other music items on the People's Music Store site. There are more than 650 stores currently, with over 250,000 songs in the catalogue - most appear to be available at $0.99 per song or $8.99 per album. The site claims to be "working with" 4,500 labels, including 4AD, XL, Rough Trade, Matador, Dominio, and Ged Day's own Warp. Other than the lack of major label music, there is another minor annoyance for those of us who don't live in the U.S. - international users will frequently run into a "we're sorry, but this release is not available in your country" message. However on the plus side, all the music available for download is DRM-free and at high quality 320Kbps." [reawriteweb]
